Articulating difference: Reading Biko-with-Hall
This article centres a selected set of “race-class debates” from the 1970s that were characterized by a powerful reformulation of political critiques of the South African racial order, both from within Marxist thought and with the dramatic entry of Black Consciousness onto the political stage. Our discussion focuses on two exemplary interventions: Biko’s testimony at the SASO/BPC trial and his presentation of the theoretical basis of BC’s politic…
Mapping movement landscapes in South Africa
The concept of a movement landscape is used to analyse continuities and changes in popular mobilization since the end of formal apartheid. Focusing on four different episodes of protest since 1997, the article examines their relationship to the ANC movement and traditions, and their organizational forms. It finds a general theme of fluid and ephemeral organization, and a distrust of formal hierarchal organization, that is relatively new in South …

Between Old and New: Struggles in Contemporary South Africa
This essay presents an analysis of recent protests in South Africa, providing historical context for the current cycle of mobilization, including the longest strike in the country's history and the growing struggle among poor residents for free access to basic utilities. Taking the state-sanctioned massacre of striking mineworkers at Marikana in 2012 as a significant marker for this current phase of protests, the essay explores some of the subseq…

Subaltern Sexiness: From a Politics of Representation to a Politics of Difference
Through personal experience of the World Social Forum (WSF) held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007, the author explores how an uncritical politics of representation has come to characterise spaces like the WSF and the new social movements and organisations of which it is composed and spaces that claim to be creating 'another world' in which racial, gender and class inequalities do not prevail. The article argues that, in neglecting to acknowledge the med…

Struggles Around the Commodification of Daily Life in South Africa
Post-apartheid South Africa has seen the emergence of new social and community movements making demands on the African National Congress government to deliver on its promise of ‘a better life for all’. In these struggles, the identity of ‘the poor’ has been increasingly mobilised, both by movements reminding the state of its obligations to its people, and in official policy discourse seeking to introduce neoliberal macro-economic changes. This pa…
