Unsettling gender and sexuality at the Point Barrow, Alaska station of the First International Polar Year (1882–1883)
The American expedition to Point Barrow, Alaska to establish a station for the First International Polar Year (IPY) in 1881 was shaped by familiar gendered and sexualised settler colonial discourses about the North as secretive, unknown, and ethereal, yet knowable by techniques of scientific observation. The First IPY (1882–1883) was a significant moment in colonial scientific exploration and research, as the largest coordinated international eff…
Revealing Narratives in Before and After Photographs of Cosmetic Breast Surgeries
Feminist cosmetic surgery scholars have been attentive to cosmetic breast surgeries as emblematic of a range of issues and questions. Breast implant and reduction surgeries have been analyzed by scholars as psychologically beneficial, as representative of unethical practices in the cosmetic surgery industry, as exemplar of the objectification of women’s bodies, and as connected to powerful cultural ideas about breasts. A curious dearth in previou…
Pro Pelle Cutem
In 1920, the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) celebrated its 250th anniversary through national and international events, as well as honours and benefits for its employees. The year 1920 was an important moment for the HBC, as it underwent institutional change to support the expansion of its department store operations through public relations and advertising strategies. Central to these strategies was an emphasis on the HBC’s central role in Canadian …
Collapsing the Surfaces of Skin and Photograph in Cosmetic Minimally-Invasive Procedures
This article proposes that cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures - Botox injections, soft-tissue fillers, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and laser treatments - are an under-researched area and provide a number of promising paths for skin studies research. I argue that cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures collapse the difference between the surfaces of the photograph and the skin - the primary surfaces of cosmetic surgery - more successfully…
"Cosmetic Surgery as "Cut-Up
The Pandrogeny project was a collaboration between the artists Lady Jaye Breyer and Genesis P-Orridge that used cosmetic surgery, hormone therapy, cross-dressing, and altered behavior in an effort to merge their two separate identities into a third, singular "pandrogyneous" character called "Breyer P-Orridge." This essay critically explores the practices and theories that comprise the Pandrogeny project, contrasting its use of cosmetic surgery to…
Lorene Squire’s Psychical Landscapes of Colonial/Modern Gender in the Canadian North
From 1937 to 1939, Lorene Squire was commissioned by The Beaver (the company magazine of the Hudson’s Bay Company) and Canadian Airways to produce photographs of the Canadian North suitable for their publications, focused on her specialisation in wildfowl photography, as well as landscapes, planes, and people. This article focuses on her 1938 commissions, and in particular two photographs of Indigenous women and two self-portraits. When these pho…
A ‘journey in feminist theory together’
Doing Feminist Theory Through Digital Video is an assignment I designed for my undergraduate feminist theory course, where students created a short digital video on a concept in feminist theory. I outline the assignment and the pedagogical and epistemological frameworks that structured the assignment (digital storytelling, participatory video and feminist approaches to service learning) before presenting an analysis of its learning outcomes glean…
