Mungo Man, Settler Mythology, and the Contest of Australia’s Deep History
Deep history is at the forefront of a contemporary reorientation of Australian history. It is at once an academic methodology, a period of the ancient past, and an embodied, living history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ enduring connection to Country. This article considers the complexities of deep history in Australia through a study of the cultural representations of Mungo Man, the 42,000-year-old human skeleton “discovered” …
What Do We Know About Threshing Traditional Grains in Australia
This article reviews ethnographic descriptions of Australia's First Nations people's grain threshing to inform future grain research and revival of practice in south-eastern Australia. The processing of grain requires many steps, and while harvesting, winnowing and grinding are comparatively well-documented, the threshing stage, which involves the removal of the husk and other nonedible parts of the seed head before the seed is winnowed and groun…

Translators' perceptions of literary post-editing using statistical and neural machine translation
In the context of recent improvements in the quality of machine translation (MT) output and new use cases being found for that output, this article reports on an experiment using statistical and neural MT systems to translate literature. Six professional translators with experience of literary translation produced English-to-Catalan translations under three conditions: translation from scratch, neural MT post-editing, and statistical MT post-edit…
Statistical Machine Translation: A Guide for Linguists and Translators
This paper presents an overview of Statistical Machine Translation (SMT), which is currently the dominant approach in Machine Translation (MT) research. InWay and Hearne (2011), we describe how central linguists and translators are to the MT process, so that SMT developers and researchers may better understand how to include these groups in continuing to advance the state-of-the-art. If these constituencies are to make an impact in the field of M…
On the Role of Translations in State-of-the-Art Statistical Machine Translation
For the state-of-the-art in Machine Translation (MT) to advance, we contend that Statistical MT (SMT) practitioners will have to collaborate with linguists and translators. This has not happened to date for two main reasons: (i) there remain many translators - and even more surprisingly, many experienced MT protagonists - who find the basic model of SMT very difficult to understand; and (ii) while current approaches to MT depend entirely on the a…
Wide-Coverage Deep Statistical Parsing Using Automatic Dependency Structure Annotation
A number of researchers have recently conducted experiments comparing “deep” hand-crafted wide-coverage with “shallow” treebank- and machine-learning-based parsers at the level of dependencies, using simple and automatic methods to convert tree output generated by the shallow parsers into dependencies. In this article, we revisit such experiments, this time using sophisticated automatic LFG f-structure annotation methodologies with surprising res…
Large-Scale Induction and Evaluation of Lexical Resources from the Penn-II and Penn-III Treebanks
We present a methodology for extracting subcategorization frames based on an automatic lexical-functional grammar (LFG) f-structure annotation algorithm for the Penn-II and Penn-III Treebanks. We extract syntactic-function-based subcategorization frames (LFG semantic forms) and traditional CFG category-based subcategorization frames as well as mixed function/category-based frames, with or without preposition information for obliques and particle …

Webmt: Developing and Validating an Example-Based Machine Translation System Using the World Wide Web
We have developed an example-based machine translation (EBMT) system that uses the World Wide Web for two different purposes: First, we populate the system's memory with translations gathered from rule-based MT systems located on the Web. The source strings input to these systems were extracted automatically from an extremely small subset of the rule types in the Penn-II Treebank. In subsequent stages, the source, target translation pairs obtaine…
