Nostalgia and the Protection of White Supremacy at a Public Farmers’ Market
In 2019, an organic produce vendor in a Bloomington, Indiana, farmers’ market was exposed as an active member of the violent white supremacist organization Identity Evropa, sparking national conversation about the whiteness of local food and local controversy over the vendor’s continued inclusion in the market. Activist groups and community members argued for the vendor’s removal from the market at public meetings and protested the vendor’s stand…
The 2022 State of Ohio Families: Challenges and Promises
With nearly 80 million families residing in the United States, the health and well-being of families continue to be a popular area of inquiry and research, especially as the country experiences a variety of challenges as well as opportunities in a unique time in its history—socially, politically, and economically. Ohio, like many states, is experiencing changes in the demographic makeup of its population, changes in family formation, gaps in econ…
County-Level Economic Changes and Drug Mortality in the United States: Evidence from the Great Recession
We aimed at examining whether county-level economic changes were associated with changes in county-level drug mortality rates since the Great Recession and whether the association is equally distributed across major sociodemographic subgroups. Using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (2004-2019), combined with census data, we conducted fixed effects analyses by including county-lev…
Are the most productive regions necessarily the most successful? Local effects of productivity growth on employment and earnings
Economists typically celebrate productivity growth as the chief way to improve living standards. Productivity growth may reduce costs, improve quality, or lead to innovation and new products, but if demand is insufficiently elastic, productivity growth can lead to weakening of labor markets. We study county‐level effects of productivity growth and productivity levels on growth in employment, income, and earnings. The results suggest that producti…
Pruning the Community Orchard: Methods for Navigating Human-Fruit Tree Relations
The Bloomington Community Orchard's volunteers articulate their experience in the orchard as working in tandem with human and nonhuman others. Orchardists and fruit trees co-construct the space, and in turn the community it fosters. This co-construction is most prominent in pruning, the most affect-laden task in the orchard's management, requiring violence and care as orchardists carve trees into shape. To understand these human-fruit tree relati…
The Shale Boom and Family Structure: Oil and Gas Employment Growth Relationship to Marriage, Divorce, and Cohabitation
Shale oil and gas extraction technology has caused a large shift in the United States' energy landscape over the last decade. This had a wide range of impacts on rural communities mostly in which oil and gas extraction occurs. While many studies have focused on the economic and environmental impact of shale development, researchers have only begun to study the social changes brought on by the shale resource extraction. We examine the influence of…

Coal and family through the boom and bust: A look at the coal Industry's impact on marriage and divorce
Entrepreneurial and Employment Responses to Economic Conditions across the Rural-Urban Continuum
In this article, we explore how local employment growth in the urban-rural continuum is affected by economic trends in industries that comprise local economies and by growth in nearby metropolitan areas. Our county-level analyses reveal heterogeneous responses. Favorable economic changes due to a fast-growing local industry mix have the largest positive impact on self-employment growth in small metropolitan areas and the smallest positive impact …

Rebuilding local foods in Appalachia: Variables affecting distribution methods of West Virginia farms
Poverty, Place, and Coal Employment across Appalachia and the United States in a New Economic Era
The impacts of employment in the coal industry remain controversial. Few studies have investigated these impacts over the decade of the great recession and in light of the nation's changing energy economy. We bring together two long-standing rural sociological traditions to address debates framed at the national level and for Appalachian communities facing the throes of transition from the coal industry. Building from rural sociology's 'poverty a…
The Role of Inside and Same-Sex Influencers in the Choice of Nontraditional Occupations
The role model approach to occupational choice predicts concern with sex appropriateness and reliance on same-sex influencers when individuals choose nontraditional occupations, while the opportunity structure approach predicts men and women respond equally to opportunity. Using data from male and female engineering and nursing students, this study evaluates both perspectives. Findings suggest the opportunity structure approach is more predictive…

Work Orientations of Males and Females: Exploring the Gender Socialization Approach
Earlier surveys show differences in work orientations of males and females, but these were based on mostly sex-segregated workers. Two broad explanations are used to examine differences in work orientations of males and females: namely the socialstructural and the gender-socialization approaches. A secondary analysis of 22 separate sudies of specific occupations are combined and used to determine if the sexes display different patterns on ten wor…

Scarcity, Income Advantage, and Mobility: More Evidence on the Functional Theory of Stratification
Two testable propositions suggested in the Davis and Moore functional theory of stratification are examined: the effect of scarcity on rewards and the effect of higher rewards on mobility. Data on the occupation of public school teaching for the period 1930 to 1971 were analyzed and compared with other wage and salary workers during those years. The proposition that scarcity increases rewards is rejected by these data, because higher incomes occu…

A Comparative Analysis of Organizational Conflict in Schools
Conflict is analyzed as a function of the organizational conditions of school size, teaching, specialization, and the centralization of authority. The inter-relationships among these explanatory variables and two forms of organizational conflict are explored with data from thirty-eight elementary and fifteen secondary schools. Conflict is classified as either intraor inter-stratum contingent upon the parties involved in the conflictual situation.…
The Impact of Voluntary Association Characteristics on Selective Attraction and Socialization
The voluntary organization literature has viewed the processes of selective attraction and socialization almost exclusively as a function of individual characteristics rather than organizational characteristics. Using data from two voluntary associations, we found that organizational characteristics (goal specificity, change orientation, and restrictiveness) were associated with the degree of selective attraction and socialization of attitudes. A…

Intergenerational Mobility Rates of Urban School Teachers
The occupation of public school teacher is analyzed in terms of the intergenerational flow of personnel from eight occupational origins. Data from a regional sample of teachers are used to determine if the rates of intergenerational mobility differ over a period of time, as simulated with five age groups, and across occupational family origins. Analysis of mobility ratios by age groups reveals the following: (1) professional and managerial occupa…
Riots and Welfare: Are They Related
This paper examines the impact of riots on the percentage increase in financial support of welfare programs at the local level. Data on 23 riot cities are compared to 20 nonriot cities of similar size to determine if the percent change in the combined city and state expenditures on welfare were different. Analysis revealed riot cities had larger budgetary increases in welfare the year following their riot; whereas, nonriot cities had no such patt…

The first approach utilizes similarity of between individual and organizational members to account for selective attraction (Beai, 1956; Harp, 1959; Black 1957; Smith, 1966). The second ap…
