  • The curation of beauty ideals through Instagram's recommender system

Open Access•Ann-Marie Wohlfarth, Christoph Bareither et al.•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2026

This paper investigates how Instagram's recommender system participates in reproducing beauty ideals through an interdisciplinary approach that combines ethnographic methods with supervised machine learning. We conceptualise beauty ideals as socioculturally constructed and intersubjective perceptions and adopt the theoretical framework of ‘curatorial assemblages’ in examining how recommender systems shape feeds. Our novel methodological approach …

  • From annotation to reflection

    Open Access•Sassan Gholiagha, Jürgen Neyer et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2026

This article challenges widespread concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education undermines critical thinking. Instead, we show how the process of annotating academic texts to be later used for training AI tools can create new opportunities for reflection and learning. Drawing on an interdisciplinary teaching and research project in International Relations (IR)—a subfield of political science—we demonstrate how students became ac…

  • Who are the “Heroes of CRISPR”? Public science communication on Wikipedia and the challenge of micro-notability

Open Access•Arno Simons, Wolfgang Kircheis et al.•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2024

Wikipedia’s influence in shaping public perceptions of science underscores the significance of scientists being recognized on the platform, as it can impact their careers. Although Wikipedia offers guidelines for determining when a scientist qualifies for their own article, it currently lacks guidance regarding whether a scientist should be acknowledged in articles related to the innovation processes to which they have contributed. To explore how…

  • A diachronic perspective on citation latency in Wikipedia articles on CRISPR/Cas-9

Open Access•Marion Schmidt, Wolfgang Kircheis et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2023

This paper analyzes Wikipedia’s representation of the Nobel Prize winning CRISPR/Cas9 technology, a method for gene editing. We propose and evaluate different heuristics to match publications from several publication corpora against Wikipedia’s central article on CRISPR and against the complete Wikipedia revision history in order to retrieve further Wikipedia articles relevant to the topic and to analyze Wikipedia’s referencing patterns. We explo…

  • From the Archive to the Computer

Open Access•Henning Schmidgen, Bernhard Dotzler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Analytics•2023

Michel Foucault famously introduced the method of “discourse analysis” in the humanities, especially in historiography. In his _Archaeology of Knowledge_, originally published in 1969, in particular, Foucault argues for making the history of knowledge the object of discourse analyses. In the context of the current surge of interest in discourse analysis in the field of computer science, however, there are hardly any references to Foucault, partly…
