Cost-effectiveness analysis of a prediction model for community-based screening of active tuberculosis
Background: Active case finding could effectively detect tuberculosis (TB) patients, but it can be costly. Therefore, a feasible, cost-saving, and efficient algorithm for community-based TB screening is needed. Methods: The study population was based on a previous TB prevalence survey conducted in the Zambia/South Africa Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS Reduction trial. We developed predictive scoring models for HIV-positive and HIV-negative/unknown pop…
Achieving the 95 95 95 targets for all
In December 2020, UNAIDS released a new set of ambitious targets calling for 95% of all people living with HIV to know their HIV status, 95% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection to receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 95% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy to have viral suppression by 2025. Adopted by United Nations Member states in June 2021 as part of the new Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS, these targets, combi…
Costs and Scale-Up Costs of Integrating HIV Self-Testing Into Civil Society Organisation-Led Programmes for Key Populations in Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Mali
Despite significant progress on the proportion of individuals who know their HIV status in 2020, Côte d'Ivoire (76%), Senegal (78%), and Mali (48%) remain far below, and key populations (KP) including female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSM), and people who use drugs (PWUD) are the most vulnerable groups with a HIV prevalence at 5–30%. HIV self-testing (HIVST), a process where a person collects his/her own specimen, performs a te…
High levels of vulnerability and anticipated stigma reduce the impetus for tuberculosis diagnosis in Cape Town, South Africa
Prolonged diagnostic and treatment delays, particularly in settings experiencing concomitant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) epidemics, undermine global TB control efforts. Current TB control policy in South Africa, as organized through the National TB Control Programme (NTP), relies on the voluntary presentation of TB suspects to local clinics for diagnosis, i.e. passive case finding (PCF). In 2005 a participatory study …
HIV counsellors' knowledge, attitudes and vulnerabilities to HIV in Lusaka, Zambia, 1994
The objective of this study was to see how HIV affected counsellors in their personal and professional lives and how they coped. A total of 101 people who were currently working as HIV counsellors were interviewed. Of these, 70 had a relative who had died of HIV, but few had been able to discuss HIV with them. Seventy-two worried about their HIV status but only 24 had had a test. Fifty-three counsellors did not want to know their status. Women co…
