  • Nonresident Fathers' and Grandparents' Early Years Support and Middle Childhood Socio‐Emotional Adjustment

Open Access•Alison Parkes, Stephanie Chamber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2021

Objective This study investigates how different patterns of nonresident father support for children and mothers in the early years predict middle childhood adjustment, and whether grandparent support has compensating effects. Background Nonresident fathers' involvement in children's lives benefits socio‐emotional adjustment, but it is unclear whether support directed at children is compromised by interparental tensions, or whether other factors m…

  • Pre-school childcare and inequalities in child development

    Open Access•Matthew J Green, Adrian Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2021

Centre-based childcare may benefit pre-school children and alleviate inequalities in early childhood development, but evidence on socio-emotional and physical health outcomes is limited. Data were from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (n = 14,376). Inverse-probability weighting was used to estimate confounder-adjusted population-average effects of centre and non-centre-based childcare (compared to parental care only) between ages 26-31 months on (a…

  • The Sexual Function Evaluation Questionnaire (SFEQ) to Evaluate Effectiveness of Treatment for Sexual Difficulties

Open Access•Kirstin R Mitchell, Karen Gurney et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2021•References: 2

Progress toward establishing the effectiveness of biopsychosocial treatment for patients with sexual problems is limited by the lack of brief measurement tools assessing change across various domains of the treatment model. We developed and psychometrically validated a new clinical evaluation tool, the Sexual Function Evaluation Questionnaire (SFEQ) to meet this gap. The SFEQ combines into a single scale the best performing items from two instrum…

  • Latent class analysis of sexual health markers among men and women participating in a British probability sample survey

Open Access•Alison Parkes, Michael Waltenberger et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

A greater prevalence and diversity of poor sexual health appears to exist among women than men in Britain, with more consistent effects on women's subjective sexual well-being. Shared health and lifestyle characteristics of higher-risk groups suggest widespread benefits of upstream interventions. Several groups could benefit from tailored interventions: men and women who underestimate their STI/HIV risk exposure, women distressed by low interest …

  • Does parenting help to explain socioeconomic inequalities in children's body mass index trajectories? Longitudinal analysis using the Growing Up in Scotland study

Open Access•Alison Parkes, Helen Sweeting et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2016•References: 36

BACKGROUND: Pathways leading to socioeconomic inequalities in young children's body mass index (BMI) are not well understood. This study examined whether parenting related to the physical and social context of children's food consumption helped to explain associations between maternal educational level and child BMI trajectory. METHODS: The study used data from 2957 families in a nationally representative birth cohort study surveyed from 2004 to …

  • Which Behavioral, Emotional and School Problems in Middle-Childhood Predict Early Sexual Behavior

Open Access•Alison Parkes, Andrea Waylen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth and Adolescence•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 85

Mental health and school adjustment problems are thought to distinguish early sexual behavior from normative timing (16-18 years), but little is known about how early sexual behavior originates from these problems in middle-childhood. Existing studies do not allow for co-occurring problems, differences in onset and persistence, and there is no information on middle-childhood school adjustment in relationship to early sexual activity. This study e…

  • OP43 Explaining High Parenting Stress in the Growing Up in Scotland Study for Mothers with Both High and Low Educational Levels

Alison Parkes, Helen Sweeting et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013

Background Stresses associated with raising a child may lead to less optimal parenting, with consequences for children’s development. Parent’s employment and receipt of social support may impact on stress differently according to family affluence. Affluent parents may be most pressured when balancing employment with child-related commitments. They may also have relocated, restricting informal support. Disadvantaged parents commonly report barrier…

  • Is Parenting Associated with Teenagers’ Early Sexual Risk‐Taking, Autonomy And Relationship with Sexual Partners

Open Access•Alison Parkes, Marion Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2011•Cited by: 20•References: 15

Parents may develop teenagers' capacity for positive and safe early sex by promoting skills and values that build autonomy and encourage sex only within a relationship. Interventions should promote supportive parenting and transmission of values, avoid mixed messages about abstinence and contraception, and acknowledge that teenagers may learn more indirectly than directly from parents about sex

  • Exposure to sexually explicit visual media and sexual debut at age 15

C Nixon, Charles M Nixon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Background and aims Longitudinal studies in the US have demonstrated associations between viewing sexually explicit media and early sexual initiation in adolescence. Protective effects of parental co-viewing and regulation of adolescents' media use have also been reported. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no current evidence exists on the effect of media on adolescent sexual debut. This study aimed to examine whether such associations could…

  • Longitudinal associations between screen time and children's behavioural and emotional adjustment at age 7

Alison Parkes, A M* Parkes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Background and objectives Research on whether children's screen time impacts on their adjustment mainly focuses on television (TV) use, and seldom considers more interactive forms of screen entertainment such as computers. Longitudinal population studies suggest negative effects of high TV use in young children on externalising behaviour including aggression and attentional problems. However, evidence (particularly for inattention/hyperactivity) …

  • Comparison of teenagers’ early same sex and heterosexual behaviour in the UK

Alison Parkes, Vicki Strange et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2009

To compare the sexual experiences of UK teenagers who have same-sex partners with those who have exclusively opposite-sex partners, in terms of context, quality and risk involved. Pupils’ background and attitudes were explored to suggest reasons for differences. Self-complete, anonymised questionnaires were administered at ages 13/14 and 15/16 years to pupils in two school-based RCTs of sex education programmes in Scotland (SHARE) England (RIPPLE…

  • The Quality of Young People’s Heterosexual Relationships

Open Access•Daniel Wight, Alison Parkes et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2008•Cited by: 15•References: 5

Most young people evaluated their early sexual experiences positively. The quality of relationships was enhanced by better communication and greater physical intimacy. For a vulnerable minority, however, early sexual experiences were negative. They could be protected by delaying first intercourse, restricting sexual activity to established relationships and learning skills to improve control in sexual encounters

  • Residential Perceptions and Housing Mobility in Scotland

Alison Parkes, Aileen Kearns et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2003•Cited by: 14•References: 31

This paper seeks to develop the evidence base for urban, neighbourhood and housing policies, that aim to increase neighbourhood satisfaction and reduce residential instability. Using the longitudinal Scottish House Condition Survey 1991-96, the paper examines whether residential perceptions are generally significant predictors of individual house moving intentions and behaviours, taking into account factors related to life cycle stage, employment…

  • Living in and leaving poor neighbourhood conditions in England

Aileen Kearns, Ade Kearns et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2003•Cited by: 43

Current neighbourhood renewal and urban policies in the UK seek to improve neighbourhood conditions in poor areas and achieve greater residential stability. Using one of the few longitudinal housing datasets available in the UK, this paper analyses the influence of residential perceptions on house moving behaviour in poor and other areas. It is found that residential dissatisfaction is notably higher among residents of poor areas, and they respon…

  • What Makes People Dissatisfied with their Neighbourhoods

    Open Access•Alison Parkes, Aileen Kearns et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2002•Cited by: 115•References: 33

A logistic regression model of individual neighbourhood dissatisfaction was developed using data from the 1997/98 Survey of English Housing. Housing satisfaction and the general appearance of the neighbourhood were closely associated with neighbourhood dissatisfaction, although perceptions of noise, friendliness, community spirit, schools and crime were also important. Although sociodemographic factors were much less important than residential pe…
