  • Children's Lived Experience of Poverty and Vulnerability in Kenya: Going Beyond Multi-dimensionality

    Open Access•Elizabeth Ngutuku•BOOK•Children's Lived Experience of…•2024

Drawing from ethnographic research, this book presents children’s lived experience of poverty and vulnerability in Kenya. By taking the case of Siaya, Kenya, which has some of the lowest indicators of child well-being, the book presents children’s complex lived experience from three interlinked everyday spaces of the home, the school and support programmes. It argues that children’s experience is formed at the interstices of material lack, histor…

  • Beyond Colonial Politics of Identity: Being and Becoming Female Youth in Colonial Kenya

    Open Access•Elizabeth Ngutuku, Auma Okwany•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2024•References: 29

This paper draws on biographical research among the Akamba and the Luo communities in Eastern and Western Kenya, respectively. Our research explored how practices of adolescence as a process, an institution, and a performance of identity interact with colonial modernities and imaginaries in complex ways. The biographical research was carried out predominantly with women born in the late colonial period in Kenya. We provide critical reflections on…

  • Re-imagining and repositioning the lived experience of children seen as outsiders in Kenya

    Open Access•Elizabeth Ngutuku•ARTICLE•Childhood•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Locating this experience in a relatively protective customary and legal regime, the context of poverty and the local imaginaries of belonging reveals the complexities that animate children's lives. I argue t…

  • Education as future breakfast: Children’s aspirations within the context of poverty in Siaya Kenya

    Open Access•Elizabeth Ngutuku•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This paper draws on ethnographic data to explore children’s aspirations through education within the context of poverty and vulnerability in Siaya Kenya. Since several children reported eating onge (nothing) for breakfast, they hoped that education would enable them to eat and enjoy a good future. I demonstrate that aspirations as orientations towards desired futures have affective dimensions [Huijsmans, Ansell, and Froerer. 2021. “Introduction: …
