  • A specific Middle Palaeolithic settlement pattern in two closely located site clusters in Transcarpathia (Ukraine)

    Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko, Béla Rácz•ARTICLE•Archaeologiai Értesítő•2026

This article aims to demonstrate a broadly similar Middle Palaeolithic settlement pattern that we have identified in two closely located site clusters in Transcarpathian Ukraine. These include MIS 5a Levallois-Mousterian and MIS 4 Quina-type Mousterian industries, each situated near different lithic raw material sources. The lithic artifacts from Horizon III (Levallois-Mousterian) and Horizon II (Quina-type Mousterian) at the Korolevo I site comp…

  • An Emireh point at Ořechov IV–Kabáty Bohunician site (South Moravia, Czech Republic)

    Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko, Petr Škrdla et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2024

The Emireh point is a triangular point, which distinctive bulb of percussion was eliminated with bifacial thinning applied to proximal part of the artefact. This point is a characteristic tool for the Emiran industries and up to yet reported from Levantine sites only. Recently, an isolated Emireh point was excavated at Bohunician site Ořechov IV in South Moravia, ca 3,000 km as the crow flies from Levantine sites

  • Lower Palaeolithic in Korolevo I (Transcarpathia, Ukraine, East-Central Europe): The earliest in Europe

    Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko•ARTICLE•Litikum•2024

A recently published article in “Nature” (Garba et al., 2024) claims that lithic finds in the lowermost artefact-bearing sediments of lithological unit 26 at the Korolevo I site (Transcarpathia, Ukraine) are the oldest in Europe, dated to ca. 1.42 Ma with cosmogenic nuclides of gravel pebbles. These surprisingly old dates were then used to build hypotheses on the geochronology and routes of the initial Homo erectus colonization of Europe from the…

  • The Palaeolithic in Transcarpathia (Ukraine) and the different use of various lithic raw material outcrops and sources

Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko, Béla Rácz•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2023

The present article proposes a new approach for the detailed analysis of lithic raw material sources and their use by various human groups during the period from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Early Upper Palaeolithic in Transcarpathia, western Ukraine. The approach is based upon the study of particular outcrops and sources of basic raw material types in Transcarpathia, examining their role in supplying various human groups across different Palaeo…

  • The Nubian Levallois technology in central Syria in the context of the Middle–Upper Palaeolithic transitional period and the IUP variability in the Eastern Mediterranean Levant

    Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko, Jean‐marie Le Tensorer et al.•ARTICLE•Litikum•2023•References: 14

This article focuses on the Nubian Levallois technology first recognized in northeastern Africa in the 1960s. Now, sites of the Middle Stone Age (MSA) Nubian Complex associated with Homo sapiens are known to occupy vast areas in northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Recently, proper Nubian Levallois technology has been recognized at sites in southern Africa and the southern part of the Eastern Mediterranean Levant as well. Here we report…

  • Vác 1 Epigravettian loci at the Danube Bend in North-Central Hungary

    Open Access•Sándor Béres, Yuri E Demidenko•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the article, the Vác 1 loci (Danube Bend area in North-Central Hungary) and its surface lithic artifacts systematically collected over the last 20 years have been analyzed. The loci and lithic artifact chaîne opératoire analyses showed that the site served as a hunter-gatherer temporary camp with some base camp characteristics and some similar with lithic artifact primary and secondary treatment processes adding to one another for both rather …

In the article, Eastern and Central European Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) specific Epiaurignacian industry with Sagaidak-Muralovka-type microliths (EASMM) is discussed in terms of its lithic artefact fossil types. The proposed fossil types are carinated atypical endscraper-cores and Sagaidak-Muralovkatype microliths. These two lithic artefact types with some other techno-typological features of the considering EASMM industry type make it distinct wit…

In spite of a very short time window available for digging, an area of 20 m2 was completely excavated and the entire structure (KSE) was carefully documented. Spatial distribution of artifacts closely follows the boundary of the paved area. The raw material spectrum is characterized by prevailing rock crystal, supplemented by quartz, plasma, erratic flint, …

    Open Access•Yuri E Demidenko, Petr Škrdla et al.•ARTICLE•Přehled výzkumů•2020•Cited by: 12•References: 8

Bladelets are a common Upper Palaeolithic technological category, often described as a proxy for the Early Upper Palaeolithic. However, bladelet production has already been documented within preceding Initial Upper Palaeolithic techno-complexes, e.g. at Boker Tachtit (Negev Desert, Israel) and Kara-Bom (Altai Republic, Russian Federation). Only isolated bladelets have been reported from the Central European Bohunician. However, a recently discove…

The article deals with a specific Late Upper Paleolithic Byki site complex, situated in the Seim river basin, in the center of Eastern Europe. Main feature of Byki 1, 2, 3, 7 (cultural layers I and Ia) sites is presence of geometric microliths (triangles) in their flint assemblages. The sites’ radiocarbon uncalibrated dates are in between 18000 and 16 000 BP. Late Upper Paleolithic human visitors at Byki sites have been not living for a long time…

  • Human Behavioral Organization in the Middle Paleolithic: Were Neanderthals Different

    Open Access•Donald O Henry, Harold J Hietala et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2004•Cited by: 99•References: 40

Interwoven with the debate regarding the biologic replacement of Neanderthals by modern humans is the question of the degree to which Neanderthals and modern foragers differed behaviorally. We consider this question through a detailed spatial analysis of artifacts and related evidence from stratified living floors within a 49-69 k.y.a. rock shelter site, Tor Faraj, in southern Jordan. The study involves a critical evaluation of living floors, the…

  • The problem of changes in Levallois technique during the technological transition from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic

    Yuri E Demidenko, Vitaly I Usik•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1993•Cited by: 35

In this article we examine the basis of primary flaking technology, the particularities of the Levallois-based industries of the transitional period from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic in the Near East (Southern Levant) and Central and Eastern Europe (southern Moravia and western Ukraine). An analysis is presented of the possible technological "generic" links between the Middle Palaeolithic Levallois industries and those of the transition from …

An intrasite study, focusing on the spatial patterns of data recovered from the two floors, complements an earlier intersite study of settlement and procurement patterns. The arrangement of hearths and the spatial distributions of artifacts and manuports indicate redundant behavioral organization for the two components.…
