Lake water body mapping with multiresolution based image analysis from medium‐resolution satellite imagery
Shoreline mapping and shoreline change detection are critical for safe navigation, coastal resource management, coastal environmental protection and sustainable coastal development and planning. The main difficulty of traditional shoreline mapping from remote sensing classification is the lack of adequate tools to characterize and combine texture and spectral information effectively. This paper introduces a method for unsupervised lake shoreline …
Optical satellite‐sensor based monitoring of glacial coverage fluctuations on Mount Kenya, 1987–2000
This paper presents the results of glacier change detection on Mount Kenya, based on optical (Landsat) sensor data dated 25 February 1987 and 21 February 2000 from Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+, respectively. The normalized difference snow index (NDSI) was used to derive the overall glacier, snow/ice and water mass on the mountain peak. The normalized ratio between band 4 and band 5 was then used to isolate the glacier from snow and water via histo…
A fast environmental change detection approach based on unsupervised multiscale texture clustering
In this paper, an analytic model for mapping land cover change that uses a novel multiresolution analysis in concert with image differencing to identify environmental change/no‐change areas is presented. The method adaptively chooses thresholds to segment targets from background, by using multiscale decomposition of the image difference. Changes due to atmospheric influences are automatically suppressed and resolution heterogeneity problems minim…
Analysis of vegetation indices for monitoring vegetation degradation in semi‐arid and arid areas of Mongolia
An attempt has been made in this study to delineate the characteristics of spectral signatures of the vegetation in terms of various vegetation indices (VIs), particularly the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index2 (MSAVI2) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) to manifest their ability to estimate vegetation biomass over a large area and to monitor vegetation degradation in arid and semi‐arid area o…
