Gaza – Kijów – Warszawa: Wspólna sprawa? O empatycznej i zaangażowanej praktyce socjologicznej
Esej traktuje o problemie zaangażowanej i empatycznej praktyki socjologicznej w obliczu współczesnych kryzysów, koncentrując się na izraelskiej wojnie w Strefie Gazy oraz rosyjskiej inwazji na Ukrainę. Kluczową figurą podjętej w tekście refleksji socjologicznej jest niejednoznaczna rola obserwatora i podmiotu uwikłanego Rothberga (2019), wprowadzona do eseju poprzez historyczne odniesienia do świadków Zagłady europejskich Żydów. Następnie analizi…
Eastern Europe’s ‘peripheral whiteness: Class and gender racialization among Polish migrants and returnees
Enhancing benefits for peer researchers: Towards a flexible and needs-based approach to participatory research
The involvement of peer researchers has recently gained popularity insocial research, and the incentives for using participatory methodologiesare well recognised. However, as we argue, the sole presence of peerresearchers does not equate to their immediate empowerment, and moreattention should be given to the roles they play in the research and theways in which they can tangibly benefit from such collaborations. Weexplore the seemingly mundane as…
Football was the key’: The role of sports in facilitating migrants’ belonging and inclusion in Poland
While there is a growing body of literature examining the roles of sports for newly arrived migrants and refugees in ‘super-diverse’ Western settings, less is known about the roles of such initiatives in other urban contexts, where everyday forms of ‘living with difference’ are only just emerging. Poland has become one of the biggest importers of migrant workers from outside of the EU in recent years. Drawing on five ethnographic cases of sports …
The ambiguous lives of ‘the other whites’: Class and racialisation of Eastern European migrants in the UK
A body of recent literature has examined how migrants from Eastern European countries have been racialised in the UK both pre- and post-Brexit, and has explored the limits of their earlier assumed ‘invisibility’ owing to their perceived whiteness. Less attention has been placed on understanding how intersections of class and nationality may play out in these processes of racialisation. In this article we argue that it is precisely the entanglemen…
Do I deserve to belong? Migrants' perspectives on the debate of deservingness and belonging
The notion of belonging, prominent in social sciences, has been recently used extensively in relation to Central Eastern European migrants in the UK. Whereas the Brexit debates on migration have spotlighted the macro-politics of belonging and the judgments on who deserves to stay and under which conditions, the question of how these discourses of ‘deservingness’ surrounding Brexit may influence the everyday and intimate aspects of belonging among…
Occupied from within: Embodied memories of occupation, resistance and survival among the Palestinian diaspora
This article explores the relationship between the body, memory and past violence. Drawing on the narratives of Palestinians who grew up in the occupied Palestinian territories, but who are now living in Poland and the UK, it examines how their bodies serve as vehicles for remembering their life under occupation. These memories of harassment, control and fear, which are mediated through their bodies, reveal the all-encompassing character of the I…
Participation and wellbeing in urban greenspace: ‘Curating Sociability’ for Refugees and Asylum Seekers
This paper examines how asylum seekers and refugees experience urban greenspaces. Whilst often overlooked in a focus on support services and integration, we argue that critically exploring the importance of urban greenspaces has wider implications for understanding how asylum seekers and refugees navigate experiences of displacement and resettlement. Drawing on empirical work foregrounding refugee experiences in Berlin, London, and Sheffield, we …
Palestine as 'a state of mind: Second-generation Polish and British Palestinians' search for home and belonging
This article reflects on the ways in which children of Palestinian exiles born in Poland and the UK relate to their ancestral homeland and how they make sense of their Palestinian inheritance in the present. It argues that while the second generation of Palestinian diasporic subjects maintain links with their parents’ homeland these connections are not limited to the intergenerational transmission of cultural identity. The article explores how Pa…
