Revisiting the Lusatian culture stronghold at Gzin, Poland: A comment on Szambelan et al. (2025)
A Late Bronze Age hoard from Elgiszewo reflects the complex interplay between bronzesmithing, metal hoarding and local identity
In 2014, a multi-type hoard of bronze metalwork was unearthed as a result of illegal metal detection on the peaty lakeshore in the village of Elgiszewo, north-central Poland. The hoard contains horse gear items, body and dress ornaments and other metal objects dating back to the Late Bronze Age, accompanied by casting mould and a Kannelurenstein that could have once formed part of a metalworker’s toolkit. This article presents and discusses the r…
Metallurgy in first-millennium BC Poland: Insights From Metal Production, Trade Networks and Landscape Archaeology
Multidisciplinary methods permit the first archaeometallurgical study of artefacts from five key first-millennium BC settlements in Poland: Grzybiany, Wicina, Kamieniec, Tarławki and Mołtajny. This project fills a lacuna in our understanding of technical ceramics, metal provenance and the role of settlements in the cultural landscape

Naszyjnik ludności kultury łużyckiej z Lulkowa, stan. 12, pow. toruński
W artykule zaprezentowano zdobiony naszyjnik, przypadkowo zna- leziony w Lulkowie koło Torunia. Artefakt został odlany w technice wytapianych modeli i jest łączony z wytwórczością ludności kultury łużyckiej końca epoki brązu i początku epoki żelaza. Pod względem surowcowym należy do okazów wykonanych z brązów cynowo-ołowiowych. Negatywy ornamentu naszyjnika wykonano już na etapie przygotowania masy formierskiej, po czym – po usunięciu formy – zdo…
A metal hoard from Susz provides new evidence for the use of bast cordage during the Lusatian period in Poland
Bast cordage production and use during the Lusatian period in Poland. • The use of bast cordage as dress accessories in the North European Bronze Age. • Co-deposition of textiles and metal objects in the south Baltic region. Archaeological textiles and cordage from the 1st millennium BCE in Poland are relatively scarce. The majority of the available evidence has been preserved in a mineralised state or as imprints in association with metal and cl…
Flint arrowhead from a hoard in Papowo Biskupie, Chełmno district: Comments on the discussion on the sacral function of lithic artefacts from the turn of the Iron Age
The article presents a flint arrowhead from Papowo Biskupie, Chełmno district. Hoards from this place and many loose metal finds are interpreted as votive offerings deposited in the water. Numerous objects made in bronze are accompanied by abundant non-cremated human bones unearthed there. The archaeological site is dated back to a period from about 1000 to 400 BC. A traceological analysis of the flint arrowhead showed that it had never been used…

Traceology suggests an unexpected use of antler cheekpieces from the Early Iron Age site at Gzin, Poland
Archaeological data confirm the widespread use of horse tack throughout the North European Bronze Age and the succeeding Hallstatt period in an inventory that included metal cheekpieces, phalerae, rein-knobs and other horse-related accessories. Similar usage has been assumed in the region of northern Poland, which has also furnished evidence for the use of horse gear accessories made of antler. This paper reports the results of traceological, iso…
The Sacred Lake Project: Preliminary findings from the Lusatian site of Papowo Biskupie, Poland
In 2023, prospection of a dried-out lake near Papowo Biskupie in north-central Poland identified substantial deposits of bronze artefacts. Excavation revealed further deposits and dozens of human skeletons that date from 1000-400 BC, suggesting that the site held particular significance as a place for sacrificial offerings in the Lusatian culture

Metalworking bricoleurs: Pragmatism or alienation? A case of the Lusatian hoard from Lipienek (Poland, 600–450 BC)
At the beginning of 750 BC, the Urnfield world-system was about to collapse, bringing about many serious cultural changes in the region of Central Europe along with the atomization of local Lusatian communities from the territory that is today northern Poland. It was a time of growing social and political competition between the Lusatian power elites, which took different forms, including more or less open struggle for influence in the metal trad…

The Younger Bronze Age and the Beginning of the Iron Age in Chełmno Land in the Light of the Evaluation of Selected Finds of Metal Products
The article presents selected finds, both previously discovered and recent ones made of metal (bronze and iron), originating from Chełmno land and related with the settlement of the Lusatian population in the Younger Bronze Age and at the beginning of the Iron Age. Due to the discovery of several casting workshops and other traces of local bronze production, it is possible to assume that a certain selection of ornaments, weapons and tools was pro…
Lake settlements of the West Baltic Barrow culture in natural and cultural landscape of North-Eastern Poland
This paper deals with the problem referred to the Early Iron Age lake settlement of the West Baltic Barrow culture and the cultural factors that affected the stilt houses among the local settlement patterns. This concept is based on the results achieved thus far for the lake settlements with a special emphasis on the sites in Mołtajny near Kętrzyn and Pieczarki near Giżycko (investigated during 1986-1992). The sites have provided the data concern…
The most recent monograph on the Kashubian barrow s in the Bronze and Iron Ages, in other words, how some archaeologists find themselves in a post-truth world
This text presents some critical comments on the most recent monograph by Radosław Janiak, referring to barrows of the Lusatian and Pomeranian Cultures from the region of the Kashubian Lake District. Apart from comments relating to ordinal and periodisation issues, the reviewer mainly stressed the research approach assumed in the monograph in question, one which is unjustified from the viewpoint of the present studies on prehistory. This approach…
Towards direct casting: Archaeometallurgical insight into a bronze mould from Elgiszewo, Poland, 900–700 BC
This study reports the results of archaeometallurgical investigations performed on a complete two-part bronze casting mould discovered in the village of Elgiszewo (north Poland). The mould was part of the so-called Lusatian founder’s hoard deposited on the southern borders of the Chełmno group territory between 900 and 700 BC. The investigations involved the employment of spectral (ED XRF, SEM-EDS, X-ray)and microscopic (SEM-EDS, OM) analyses. Th…
