Heraclius. A Commander in the Service of Leo I and Zeno
Heraclius’ career, the one that can be traced in primary sources, lasted seven years. In its course he held the position of comes rei militaris and, perhaps, magister militum vacans and magister militum per Thracias. His greatest victories came in a war against the Vandals. They forced Gaiseric, the Vandal’s leader to undertake peace negotiations. However, these victories were eclipsed by Heraclius’ failures in the fight against Theodoric Strabo’…
Hamartolosem (IX w.) i Konstantyna Manassesa (XII w.).
Marcellinus Comes on Emperor Anastasius A Handful of Remarks
Anastasius was for Marcellinus not only a historical figure, but a ruler whose reign he was first able to observe from the perspective of his native Illyricum, and later as an inhabitant of Constantinople. The dominant influence on Marcellinus’ attitude towards Anastasius, as has already been pointed out many times, had been the Emperor’s religious policy, to which the chronicler, as a supporter of the orthodoxy, was opposed. Undoubtedly it was a…
The Qur’ān in Medieval Slavic Writings. Fragmentary Translations and Transmission Traces
The Qur’ān was never translated into Church Slavic in its entirety; still, in the writings of some mediaeval Christian authors (Byzantine and Latin) quite extensive quotations and borrowings from it can be found. Many of these texts were transmitted in the Slavia Orthodoxa area. The aim of this article is to present the Church Slavic literary sources which contain quotations from the Qur’ān. The analysis covers Slavic translations of Byzantine a…
Umiarkowanie i roztropność Symeona, władcy bułgarskiego w listach Mikołaja Mistyka, patriarchy Konstantynopola. Kilka uwag
Lilingis, the Bastard Half-Brother of Illus
The paper is devoted to Lilingis – one of the leaders in the Isaurian uprising against emperor Anastasius I. He was Illus’ half-brother. Illus was an Isaurian who, aside from Zeno, played the most important role in the life of the Byzantine state in the 470s and 480s. It is possible that from 484, Lilingis held the position of the Isaurian comes and was so successful at it that he probably retained it until the end of Zeno’s reign and gained auth…
Bizantyńscy intelektualiści o wojnie i pokoju (Mikołaj Mistyk i Teodor Dafnopates)
Muhammad and the Origin of Islam in the Byzantine-Slavic Literary Context. A Bibliographical History
The presented publication is a type of bibliographic dictionary, compiled by an interdisciplinary team of authors (Byzantynists and Paleoslavists), containing an overview of medieval texts referring to the person of Muhammad, the Arabs, and the circumstances of the birth of Islam, which were known in the Slavia Orthodoxa area (especially in its eastern part, i.e. in Rus’). Therefore, it presents the works written in the Church Slavic language bet…
John the Scythian – a Slayer of Usurpers and the Isaurians
The paper is devoted to John the Scythian – one of the chiefs of the Byzantine army in the eighties and nineties of the 5th century. Based on the sources, the military career of John the Scythian lasted 16 years. He spent less time defending the borders of the empire and more fighting (often, victoriously) against usurpers and peoples who either had lived in its territory for centuries (the Isaurians) or sought a place to settle there (the Ostrog…
Tsar Peter (927–969) in the "Tale of the Prophet Isaiah". A few remarks
Tale of the Prophet Isaiah is classed among the historical-apocalyptic literature. It was written at the time when the Bulgarian lands were already a part of the Byzantine Empire. In it, we find an extraordinarily interesting passage regarding Peter. The anonymous author emphasises the fact that his was a sinless life, spent in purity. Peter led a people chosen by God, similarly to a Byzantine emperor. Associating him with Constantine the Great o…

The Arabs in the Chronicle of Constantine Manasses
This paper looks into the piece by Constantine Manasses considering how it depicts the Arabs. It appears Manasses saw the Arabs primarily as bloody and cruel plunderers who invaded the Byzantine lands. Indeed, they won some of the fights against the Byzantines but eventually had to accept their superiority and concede defeat. It should also be noted that Constantine Manasses did not bring up religious themes when referring to the Arabs
Car bułgarski Piotr (927-969) w bizantyńskiej historiografii X-XII wieku
Byzantine historians tied Peter primarily with the establishment of the lasting peace with the Empire in 927. In the sources that present the events from before the reign of the emperor Nikephor Phokas (963-969), when the relations between both states deteriorated, Peter is commonly portrayed as a peacemaker, a deeply religious man, accepting of the Byzantine way of understanding the role of the ruler in religious matters. However, Byzantine aut…
Rola cara Piotra (927-969) w życiu bułgarskiego Kościoła. Kilka uwag
Tsar Peter was a ruler who was active in the sphere of church policy, and is pictured to have been a deep believer himself. He is credited with the fact of granting the title of patriarch to the Bulgarian archbishop, which most probably occurred under the framework of the agreement of 927 (?933/934). The act symbolically completed the process of acquiring full maturity and independence by the Church of Bulgaria. Peter, as the first Bulgarian rul…
Bunt Michała przeciw carowi Piotrowi (?930)
The article refers to the repeatedly discussed subject of the rebellion staged by Michael, the son of Simeon I of Bulgaria, against Peter his (?)step-brother. The author of the study has re-analysed sources on the uprising for the motives behind the conspiracy and its scope. The conspiracy has been concluded to have primarily been an aspect of the struggle for power amongst the successors of Simeon
On the Reliability of Constantine Porphyrogenitus’ Account of the “Flight” of Prince Časlav from Bulgaria
The present text aims to reflect on the reliability of Constantine Porphyrogenitus’ account about the departure of Časlav, a Serbian prince, from Bulgaria at the beginning of the reign of Peter I, the successor of Symeon. The passage devoted to this event is located in the De administrando imperio (32, p. 159, 161) by the learned emperor. Constantine Porphyrogenitus’ relation about the “flight” of Časlav to Serbia should be treated as manipulated…

Opowieść o krzyżu żelaznym” jako źródło do dziejów wojny bułgarsko-węgierskiej z lat 894-896
The Tale of the Iron Cross does not form a primary source for the studies on history of the Bulgaro-Hungarian conflict 894-896. However, it deepens our knowledge on its memory in the Bulgarian society as it presents, to a certain degree, the wiews of the medieval Bulgarians ona war as a notion. The paper is supplemented by the Polish translation of the fragments of the Tale of the Iron Cross (by Jan M. Wolski) with the Old Church Slavonic origina…
Wojsko pogańskiej Bułgarii w opinii bizantyńczyków. Wybrane aspekty
The present text focuses on presenting opinions of the Byzantines about the rulers of pagan Bulgaria as military leaders and reasons given by Byzantine authors explaining mishaps of their troops in battles against Bulgaria. The author concludes that, in general, the Byzantines did not allow for a thought that they could be defeated by any external power, in the least by the barbarian Mysians/ Bulgarians. However, if such occurrences took place, …

Legalization of Usurpers’ Power in Byzantium from the Seventh to the first Half of the Ninth Century
Sumując rozważania dotyczące pierwszego problemu autor dochodzi do wniosku, iż armia bizantyńska, kręgi senatorskie, ludność Konstanty…
Zbrodnie cesarza Fokasa
This article is devoted to accusations towards emperor Phocas which can be found in Byzantine sources and in professional literature. For the Byzantines Phocas became an archetype of a ruler-tyrant. Phocas was accused of exceptional cruelty. Evidence of it was murder of emperor Maurice and his family, extermination of senatorial class or bloody repressions towards circus factions. Contemporary scholars accused Phocas of total incompetence which w…
Illus Izauryjczyk wobec uzurpacji Bazyliskosa
Hereby paper was dedicated to Illus Isaurian’s part played in events connected with Basiliscus’ usurpation in years of 475-476. At the stage of preparations to Basilicus’ usurpation, Illus acted as an intermediary between Basiliscus and Armatos and Verina. Zeno’s debar from posts of authority went on without bloodshed, without armed lighting, with the main part played by Verina and Basiliscus. In those circumstances most of sources take no accoun…
Konstantynopol w listach Teofilakta, arcybiskupa Ochrydy
The article discusses the manner adopted by Theophylakt, the archbishop of Ochrid, an eminent theologian, rhetor and teacher living at the end of the XIth and the beginning of the XIIth centuries, to describe Constantinople, the Capital of the Byzantine Empire
Konstantynopol w "Kronice" Marcellina Komesa
Marcellinus’ Chronicie certainly belongs to the canon if its literary genre and as such it has been analyzed by scholars. It seems though, that it can also be looked at as a record of some observations of the life of a metropolis, done by its long-standing inhabitant. The inventory of issues picked-up by Marcellinus is not accidental and does not only serve a more or (mostly) less detailed description of the history of the Empire, but also reflec…
The Monk versus the Philosopher
The article is devoted to a few problems: 1 how Symeon and Leo the Philosopher looked at the Bulgarian-Byzantine war of 894–896; 2. what place it took in their life experiences; 3 how it was inscribed in the concept of relations between countries whose inhabitants follow the same religion. The war of the years 894–896 showed that Symeon was not only a cabinet scholar and a former monk, but a statesman, a gifted leader, skillful and ruthless negot…
Kwestia Patriarchatu Bułgarskiego w 1. poł. X wieku
One of the key points of tsar Symeon’s political program was achieving autocephaly for the Bulgarian church and making its head a Patriarch. It is possible that the archbishop of Bulgaria was proclaimed a Patriarch (913) without Byzantine consent, but the sources only allow for attempting to show that this matter was reflected in the peace treaty concluded after Symeon’s death (927) by Peter, his son
