  • Brian Wilson’s Song Cycles

    Philip Lambert•ARTICLE•Rock Music Studies•2021

In the Beach Boys’ eleventh studio album, Pet Sounds (1966), the group’s primary creator, Brian Wilson, set forth a compelling flow of lyrical themes across a shimmering soundscape to create what has been described as one of the earliest concept albums. Its eleven songs and two instrumentals in fact constitute a “song cycle” as conventionally defined, with a transparent narrative and artful progression of interwoven musical ideas. Further, Pet So…

  • Half-Diminished Seventh Chords and Their Contexts

    Open Access•Philip Lambert•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 19

A comprehensive theory of half-diminished seventh chord usages recognises the potential of the chord's outer pitches to move in one of four ways: wedging inward, wedging outward, with the root as the common tone or with the seventh as the common tone. Typical destination chords are major and minor triads but can also be seventh chords, as in the opening phrase of Wagner's Prelude to Act 1 of Tristan und Isolde. Examples from the music of Berlioz,…

  • Compulsory Community Treatment? I. Ontario Stakeholders' Responses to “Helping those Who Won't Help Themselves”

Françoise Boudreau, Philip Lambert•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Community…•1993

This paper explores the highly controversial issue of compulsory treatment of allegedly mentally disordered persons within the community. In light of American literature on the subject, we examine and contrast the positions and arguments of a variety of Ontario stakeholders. This is done through content analysis of 224 submissions to the Ontario Ministry of Health in response to its "Discussion Paper Towards Community Mental Health Services Legis…

  • Berg's Path to Twelve-Note Composition

    Philip Lambert•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•1993

Writings on Berg's twelve-note music have illuminated the idiosyncratic techniques of construction and derivation operating among multiple rows within a single composition. The roots of Berg's approach to the twelve notes have been traced to aggregate formations appearing in the pretwelve-note works, such as the theme based on diverging ('wedge'-like) chromatic lines in Song 1 of the Altenberg Lieder, Op. 4, the twelve-pitchclass verticality in S…

  • The Effects of Disguising Scale Purpose on Reliability and Validity

    V K Kumar, K B Rehill et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•1986•Cited by: 1

Disguising scale purpose by using an innocuous skill title and filler items had no effect on the reliability and validity of Rotter's Interpersonal Trust Scale

  • Equity and sexual satisfaction in recently married couples

Elaine Hatfield, David Greenberger et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1982•Cited by: 22•References: 1

This study was designed to determine whether or not equity considerations are important in couples' sexual relations. To answer this question, 53 newlywed couples were interviewed about their sexual relationships. Two main hypotheses were tested: (a) Men and women who feel their relationships are equitable will be more content (less distressed) than people who feel either overbenefited or underbenefited. (b) Men and women who feel equitably treat…
