Temporal dimension of new-Zeno paradoxes
The paper investigates some properties of new-Zeno paradoxes. New-Zeno paradoxes are thought experiments whose conditions are set up in terms of Zeno sequences of numbers, i.e. strictly increasing or strictly decreasing denumerable sequences with limits. The paper focuses on the space ship paradox formulated by José Benardete, and some of its varieties formulated by Bas van Fraassen and Pérez Laraudogoitia. It is shown that paradoxes of this sort…
On two formalizations of the principle of knowability de re
The article is devoted to the problem of logical representation (formalization) of the principle of knowability de re. The principle says that any true proposition can be known de re. The aim of the paper is of a critical character. Two formalizations of the principle of knowability de re are examined, namely ones suggested by Edgington and Proietti, and it is shown that both do not solve the problem. I argue that Edgington’s formalizations does …
Kaplan and Marti on Definite Descriptions
Donnellan’s distinction between referential and attributive uses of definite descriptions has two explanations — the semantic and the pragmatic one. A version of semantic explanations was outlined by Kaplan and elaborated in detail by Marti. They construe a referentially used definite description as a proper name in the Millian sense. In a recent paper, I showed that the evidence Kaplan–Marti theory relies on is inappropriate with respect to the …
Kaplan and Marti on definite descriptions
Donnellan’s distinction between referential and attributive uses of definite descriptions gave rise to controversy between semantic and pragmatic accounts of referentially used descriptions. Kaplan adumbrated and Marti elaborated in detail a semantic account that assimilates referentially used definite descriptions with proper names in the sense of the theory of direct reference. I argue that the evidence Kaplan-Marti theory relies on is inapprop…
The critique of the theory of logical causality
One of the solutions to Bernardete’s paradox and a number of analogous paradoxes is based on the idea that there is a special type of causality — logical causality. This solution was proposed by Hawthorne and modified by Uzquiano. The paper presents a criticism on it. I put forward objections against Uzquiano’s modification of Hawthorne theory as well as against the very idea of logical causality. The conclusion is to the effect that, unless othe…
Knowability Without Rigidity
The most straightforward interpretation of the principle of knowability is that every true proposition may be known. This, taken together with some intuitively appealing ideas, raises a problem known as the Church–Fitch paradox. There is a wide variety of alternative interpretations of the principle of knowability that have been offered to avoid the paradox. Some of them are based on rigidification of certain aspects of what is knowable. I examin…
