  • Termination of the Last Glaciation in the Iberian Peninsula Inferred from the Pollen Sequence of Quintanar de la Sierra

Open Access•M Cristina Peñalba, Maurice Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

A 4.5-m-thick late-glacial pollen sequence, supported by 17 AMS 14 C dates, has been investigated at the Quintanar de la Sierra marshland (Iberian cordillera, north-central Spain). Pollen zones were defined that correspond to successive phases in vegetation history during the end of the Late Würm, late-glacial interstade, and Younger Dryas periods. A transfer function approach has been adopted to derive quantitative climate estimates from the pol…

  • Sea-Level Estimates during the Last Deglaciation Based on δ 18 O and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry 14 C Ages Measured in Globigerina bulloides

    Open Access•Edouard Bard, Richard G Fairbanks et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1989

Coupled measurements of δ 18 O and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C in a particular species of planktonic foraminifera may be used to calculate sea-level estimates for the last deglaciation. Of critical importance for this type of study is a knowledge of the seasonality of foraminiferal growth, which can be provided by δ 18 O measurements of modern shells (core tops, plankton tows). Isotopic (δ 18 O, AMS- 14 C dating) and faunal records (…

  • AMS- 14 C Ages Measured in Deep Sea Cores from the Southern Ocean

Open Access•Edouard Bard, Laurent Labeyrie et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1989

14 C dates obtained by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) on monospecific foraminiferal samples from two deep-sea sediment cores raised in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean have been corrected for the difference in 14 C composition between atmosphere and sea surface by using a reconstruction of the latitudinal 14 C gradient which existed in the Southern Ocean prior to 1962. The corrected AMS- 14 C data show a reduced sedimentation rate in …

  • The Last Interglacial Ocean

    Open Access•Rose Marie L Cline, James D Hays et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

The final effort of the CLIMAP project was a study of the last interglaciation, a time of minimum ice volume some 122,000 yr ago coincident with the Substage 5e oxygen isotopic minimum. Based on detailed oxygen isotope analyses and biotic census counts in 52 cores across the world ocean, last interglacial sea-surface temperatures (SST) were compared with those today. There are small SST departures in the mid-latitude North Atlantic (warmer) and t…

  • C Record of Benthic Foraminifera in the Last Interglacial Ocean

    Open Access•Jean-Claude Duplessy, Jean‐Claude Duplessy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

The 13 C/ 12 C ratios of Upper Holocene benthic foraminiferal tests (genera Cibicides and Uvigerina ) of deep sea cores from the various world ocean basins have been compared with those of the modern total carbon dioxide (TCO 2 ) measured during the GEOSECS program. The δ 13 C difference between benthic foraminifera and TCO 2 is 0.07 ± 0.04‰ for Cibicides and −0.83 ± 0.07‰ for Uvigerina at the 95% confidence level. δ 13 C analyses of the benthic …
