Preservice teachers’ perspectives regarding their understanding of global citizenship education in Kuwait and Germany: A comparative study
Global Citizenship Education (GCE) plays a significant role in supporting the development (or the preparation) of informed and active citizens capable of engaging with global challenges in an increasingly interconnected world. Research within the GCE field suggests that there is presently a lack of investigation into preservice teachers’ conceptual understandings of the topic. This study, therefore, aim to address this gap in the literature by ex…
The relationship between social inhibitions and various measures of communication skills in two types of digital simulations
Teacher education simulations are useful for learning communication skills under authentic conditions. However, they can also inspire social inhibitions, particularly among individuals who experience anxiety in interpersonal situations. Digital simulations have the potential to provide alternative, safe spaces for socially inhibited students to practice communication skills. It is unclear, however, which formats of digital simulations are the mos…
The role of performance skills in German teacher education: Empirical relations between general pedagogical knowledge, communication skills, and grades
This contribution explores empirical associations between general pedagogical knowledge (GPK), communication skills, and grades in initial teacher education. We assessed the GPK and communication skills of 105 student teachers in Germany, using a knowledge test and a performance-based assessment. Empirical results show a significant correlation between GPK and grades but not between communication skills and grades. GPK is associated with the numb…
Comparing learning opportunities of generic skills in higher education to the requirements of the labour market
In research on higher education, the link between education and future professional success is well-documented. Little research, however, has been done about existing learning opportunities at institutions of higher education that help students acquire generic skills and on the fit between such learning opportunities and labor market demands. To address these questions, we adapted an existing scale for assessing areas of generic skills, which ori…

Self‐rated competences and future vocational success: A longitudinal study
Today, a major goal in higher education is the advancement of students’ vocational competences. To assess the extent to which this goal is met, both competences acquired during university studies and later vocational success need to be measured. In our study, we collected self‐ratings of competences (t1) and indicators of vocational success (t2) in 210 alumni of the Freie Universität Berlin. Using structural equation models along with this longit…
