The bonnet monkey ( Macaca radiata )
General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston Postmenopausal women excrete significantly greater quantities of radioimmunoassayable luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) during fasting than during the control or refeeding periods. The concentrations of these gonadotropins in the serum, however, are not affected. In the present studies, ovariectomized Bonnet monkeys ( Macaca radiata ) and ovariectomized Sprague‐Dawl…
The interrelationship between sex skin swelling and the urinary excretion of LH, estrone, and pregnanediol by the cycling female chimpanzee
The interrelationship between sex skin swelling and the urinary excretion of luteinizing hormone and sex steroids was investigated during ovulatory menstrual cycles in adult female chimpanzees. Estrone was excreted in two peaks, one during the preovulatory and the other during the midluteal phase. Maximum swelling of the sex skin was attained several days before the preovulatory estrone peak. The LH surge preceded or accompanied beginning detumes…
Transfemoral catheterization of the cavernous sinus outflow with comparison of “central” and “peripheral” gonadotropin patterns in bonnet monkeys
Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in central (C) samples obtained by transfemorally catheterizing the inferior petrosal sinus of female bonnet monkeys were compared with those in peripheral (P) samples obtained simultaneously from the saphenous veins of two intact and two oophorectomized bonnet monkeys, before, during, and after luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulation. Significant d…
Menstrual Cycles
Weight loss causes loss of menstrual function (amenorrhea) and weight gain restores menstrual cycles. A minimal weight for height necessary for the onset of or the restoration of menstrual cycles in cases of primary or secondary amenorrhea due to undernutrition is indicated by an index of fatness of normal girls at menarche and at age 18 years, respectively. Amenorrheic patients of ages 16 years and over resume menstrual cycles after weight gain …
