  • Immunological diagnosis of multiple myeloma in a medieval bone

    Open Access•C Cattaneo, K Gelsthorpe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1994•Cited by: 4•References: 4

An inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using monoclonal antibodies has been used to confirm the diagnosis of IgA type multiple myeloma in a small fragment (< 10 g) of cranium from a medieval female. Further testing by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting showed that the IgA was mainly polymeric, suggesting that the individual would have suffered from a hyperviscosity syndrome. This is the first ti…

  • Blood residues on stone tools

    C Cattaneo, K Gelsthorpe et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1993•Cited by: 33•References: 14

Three series of bloodstained flakes and bones were buried in soil out of doors, retrieved month by month, and tested using a sensitive and specific ELISA with monoclonal antibodies to see if any human albumin or IgG, or bovine albumin, could be detected. A few tests were positive, including a scraper examined after twelve months' burial, but many were negative. A fourth series of bloodstained flakes kept in laboratory conditions tested highly pos…

  • Reliable identification of human albumin in ancient bone using Elisa and monoclonal antibodies

    Open Access•C Cattaneo, K Gelsthorpe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1992•Cited by: 8•References: 17

In order to help reconstruct ancient dietary, domestic, and ritual behaviour, a method was developed to identify the blood protein albumin in ancient skeletal material. This was an inhibition enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a monoclonal antibody of IgG class against human albumin. With fresh material, the technique gave consistent and specific results and could detect as little as 10 ng of albumin. Extracts of bone from the Englis…

  • Detection of blood proteins in ancient human bone using Elisa

    Open Access•C Cattaneo, K Gelsthorpe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 13

The immunological identification of species-specific blood proteins in skeletal remains has an important role in the reconstruction of ancient dietary, ritual and domestic behaviour. However, which protein provides the most suitable target for such work has not been considered previously, and the present investigation was carried out on human bone to assess the relative merits of IgG and albumin.Extracts of bone from 31 individuals (from the Engl…
