Supplementary Syllables in Anglo-Irish Folk Singing
Frequent use of supplementary syllables distinguishes the singing from the speech of many Irish folk singers. These syllables are formed in the meaningful text by recourse to various procedures which have their basis in the spoken language; but the lengthening of speech in song greatly enlarges their scope. This article is concerned with the European ballad genre as defined in practice in the English and Scottish field by F. J. Child, and I shall use the term ‘old’ balladry to refer strictly to that genre. Singing Traditions of a Bilingual Parish in North-West Ireland
In the summer of 1968 I recorded 91 songs and song fragments from the local oral tradition of a district in Donegal, the North-West county of Ireland. The district happens to be roughly co-terminous with the ecclesiastical and old civil parish of Glencolumbkille, which contains the larger part of the South-West Donegal gaeltacht (native Irish-speaking area).
