  • “A land whose stones are iron…”—Iron ore sources in the Southern Levant

    Open Access•Adi Eliyahu-Behar, Adi Eliyahu‐behar et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2023

Recent discoveries of iron production remains in multiple Iron Age sites throughout the Southern Levant indicate the significance of iron production in the region during this time. However, one main question remains unanswered—that is, provenance: Where were the iron resources located? Were they local or brought from afar? Answering these questions would allow great potential for reconstructing iron-ore procurement strategies and exploitation pra…

  • The Metal Assemblage of Early Iron Age el-Aḥwat

    Open Access•Tzilla Eshel, Ofir Tirosh et al.•ARTICLE•Tel Aviv•2023•References: 6

The large metal assemblage of the unique site of el-Aḥwat, a short-lived Iron I settlement, is presented here for the first time. It mainly comprises local tools, jewellery and evidence of bronzeworking, typical of Iron Age I urban settlements in the lowlands, mostly continuing Late Bronze Age traditions. Spatial distribution of the metal finds shows that metals were abundant across the site. Lead isotope analysis reveals that the copper at the s…

  • Evidence for sophisticated raw material procurement strategies during the Lower Paleolithic—Hula Valley case study

Open Access•Meir Finkel, Oded Bar et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 30

The Hula Valley has two key Acheulian sites: Gesher Benot Ya'aqov (GBY), a large flake Acheulian site with hundreds of basalt bifaces and a significant number of flint handaxes, and Ma'ayan Barukh (MB), where more than 3500 flint handaxes were collected. Over the last one million years, the valley was filled by alluvium and basalt flows, devoid of flint sources suitable for handaxe production. We conducted archaeological and geological surveys co…

  • The “Flint Depot” of prehistoric northern Israel

    Open Access•Meir Finkel, R Barkai et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2019•Cited by: 18•References: 22

Recent research has demonstrated that the Eocene Timrat formation in northeastern Israel, which appears as an extensive land “strip” west of and parallel to the Rift Valley, was a major source of prehistoric flint. This supposition is supported by three large‐scale extraction and reduction (E&R) complexes identified within this region, which offer direct evidence of intense Lower and Middle Palaeolithic exploitation and limited Neolithic/Chalcoli…

  • Four Iron Age Silver Hoards from Southern Phoenicia

Tzilla Eshel, Naama Yahalom-Mack et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2018

Iron Age silver in the Levant has attracted scholarly attention regarding its function as currency. Scholars debate whether hacksilber can be interpreted as representing a pre-monetary economic system, using pre-portioned silver exchanged in standardized weights, which inspired the invention of coins. In this study, four Iron Age silver hoards from southern Phoenicia (Tell Keisan, Tel Dor, ʿEin Hofez, and ʿAkko) are examined from archaeological a…
