Is Liturgy Art? Post-Secular Hybridity in João Madureira’s Missa de Pentecostes
This article addresses recent critiques of secularisation as a linear explanatory model for religious change in European societies, proposing that contemporary artistic creation is a fertile site for observing new interrelations between the secular and the religious. Focusing on João Madureira’s Missa de Pentecostes (2010), composed for the ensemble ‘Sete Lágrimas’ and part of a cultural project by the Roman Catholic community of ‘Capela do Rato’…
Less gives less, more gives more: Socialisation and religiosity in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area
This article explores the theme of religious socialisation in an environment marked by modernity. It has three goals: first, to analyse the changes in religious socialisation across age groups; second, to analyse the impact of religious socialisation on religiosity; and third, to analyse the impact of religiosity on religious socialisation. Based on quantitative data about the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, results show the following: The level of rel…
Tension and Transaction: Dynamics of Religious Recomposition from a Multiscopic Perspective
This review article is based on re-reading the Joas vs. Weber discussion about the macro-concept of “disenchantment”. For Joas, the Weberian thesis brings together, in a single explanatory model, different social processes that must be differentiated. Joas’s proposal highlights the need to build research models sensitive to the interaction and the play of different logics of action between tension and transaction. The collection of some of the mo…
Religion and Cultural Mediations: Perspectives from Contemporary Portuguese Society
The article reviews the concept of "cultural religion", pursuing its different modulations. The limits of the idea oscillate between its interpretation as a form of obsolescence of religion in secularized societies and the possibility that it is a specific modality of religious identification. However, this theoretical construct does not sufficiently incorporate a focus on the processes of cultural transmission in complex societies. From the noti…

Understanding Personal Stances on Religion: The Relevance of Organizational Behavior Variables
This paper develops a framework for analyzing two personal stances on religion—Adherence to Religion and Autonomy from Religion. We propose that the two stances are independent constructs rather than opposite poles of the same continuum. Each stance is conceptualized as a higher-order construct, with different first-order measures of motivations, beliefs and perceptions. With these conceptualizations, we explore the relevance of Organizational Be…
Public Theology in the Context of the Religious Dualization Phenomenon in Multiple Modernities
This article aims to analyze the tasks of public theology concerning the religious phenomenon in a context of multiple modernities. The interaction of religion and public space may take the form of a disjunction between public and private that strengthens the rigid discourse of religious identity against a common project of society. In this context, the place of religion in the public life becomes a significant challenge for public theology. Ther…
Believers without Religion: Trends and Paradoxes in Portuguese Society
By analysing the result of a survey conducted in 2018 in the most populated metropolis in Portugal, this study seeks to make a sociological characterisation of ‘believers without religion’ from a dual perspective: on one hand, their proximity to the non-believers groups regarding religious practices; on the other hand, their adjacency to Portuguese cultural Catholicism with respect to beliefs and attitudes. The growth of this population expresses…
Assim, as tradições rel…
