  • Constructions Built of Constructions

Open Access•Valentina Zhukova, Ekaterina Rakhilina et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Slawistik•2026

This study examines the most numerous type of construction presented in the Russian Constructicon, namely intensifiers. We studied intensifiers in the context of comparative constructions of inequality like Х bol’še Y ‘X is bigger than Y’ –> Х gorazdo bol’še Y ‘X is much bigger than Y’. Comparative constructions and intensifiers are usually studied separately since they belong to two distinct semantic fields. However, the interaction of two const…

  • Russian grammar as a constructicon

    Open Access•Valentina Zhukova, Laura A Janda•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2024

While linguistics traditionally keeps lexicon separate from grammar, Construction Grammar takes the grammatical construction as the basic unit of language. A grammatical construction integrates the roles of lexemes with their typical grammatical contexts, suggesting the advantages of a comprehensive approach. Furthermore, according to Construction Grammar, grammatical constructions comprise a system in which constructions mutually reinforce each …

  • William Croft’s approach to constructions in comparison with the system of constructions in the Russian Constructicon

Valentina A Zhukova, Valentina Zhukova et al.•ARTICLE•Voprosy Jazykoznanija•2024

In this article, we discuss the approach to description of constructions adopted in William Croft’s monograph “Morphosyntax. Constructions of the World’s languages” (2022) and compare it to the approach to description and classification that is used in the Russian Constructicon. We conclude that Croft’s system and the Russian Constructicon show several substantial differences. First, Croft’s approach is based on the notion of Comparative Concepts…

  • From data to theory

Open Access•Laura A Janda, Anna Endresen et al.•ARTICLE•Constructions and Frames•2023

The semantic classification of over 2,200 constructions in the Russian Constructicon has emerged objectively from empirical analysis. The resulting semantic classification comports with and goes beyond frame semantics, revealing complex patterns of related constructions verified against corpus data and by a panel of native speakers. Our model of a constructicon can inform and complement existing approaches with additional findings. We detail our …

  • How to threaten in Russian

    Open Access•Valentina Zhukova•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2023

The article analyzes various linguistic means to carry out threats in Russian with special focus on 27 constructions tagged as “Threat” in the Russian Constructicon, a linguistic repository of more than 2200 constructions in the Russian language. The major purpose of the current study is to investigate what constitutes a threat in Russian and how threats are related to other constructions. Unlike talking about threats, performing them in Russian …
