Steal and theft
The work concerns itself with studying the way the notions thief and theft, which the author considers to be rather late and secondary, are realized in Celtic languages in diachronic perspective. The author constructs the original four-component model of the contemporary notion theft, and traces, on the basis of comparative material, the development of the original notions the model is based on (a secret action, deprivation through the distancing…
The Irish Saga
The work considers traditional use of the term “saga” meaning the quantum of the Old Irish epic narrative, in Russian and European research. The correlation of the Russian term’s saga semantics with the English and French (saga) as well as German (die Sage) usages of the notion in scholarly texts describing the same denotates is also analyzed. The comparison with the semantic field of the original term scél, having “story, tale” as one of its mea…
“The Dispensation of the Land”
The article deals with the influence of archaic mythological motifs on the historiography, using the existence of different plots in the old Russian and the Middle Irish sources. The chronicle tradition of ‘calling the Vikings’ is usually considered as an element of pseudo-historic narratives of migratory tale, as are the motifs of ‘three brothers’ and ‘marriage with a daughter of the local ruler’. An analysis of Giraldus Cambrensis’ historical t…
The Position of Middle Irish
A new method of “dating” language changes was proposed in the 1950s by Morris Swadesh (1952, 1955), who examined changes in the basic vocabulary of a language and postulated that the 1000-year retention rate represents 86% of the vocabulary; in other words, 14 words from a 100-word list must be replaced. An attempt to calculate the split between Goidelic and Brittonic based on this approach was made in Greene (1964) and later in a fundamental stu…
Social and Cultural Motivations and Semantic Shifts in Latin Doublet Borrowings in Old Irish
Latin borrowings in Early Irish and Brittonic are, as usually, connected with Christianization and wide spreading of Latin learning and monastic culture. At the same time, we can find in Irish and Welsh some earlier borrowings due to the Romanization of Brittany. Early borrowings differ by their phonetics. The article deals with the problem of semantic changes of Latin loanwords in Irish and with the motivation of their development inside the Iri…
