Hierarchy, Tasks, Space: An analysis of tie formation in the Palermo Mafia
Labor Supply within the Firm
There is substantial variation in working time even within employer-employee matches, yet estimates of the Frisch elasticity of labor supply can be near zero. This paper proposes a tractable theory of earnings and working time to interpret these observations. Production complementarities attenuate the response of working time to idiosyncratic, or worker-specific, shocks, but firm-wide shocks are mediated by preference parameters. The model can be…
Breaking the silence: The effects of online social movements on gender-based violence
This paper investigates the impact of online social movements against gender-based violence (GBV) on GBV-related crime. Using machine learning techniques, we construct a novel dataset tracking the prevalence of GBV-related social media movements on Twitter from 2014 to 2017. Matching this data with weekly FBI crime reports across U.S. states we estimate the effect of tweets related to GBV on GBV-related reported crime. Our econometric approach ai…
Covid-19 and mental health in China: The effects of personality
BACKGROUND: China was the first country affected by the COVID-19 virus, and it is a very important case to study the effects of the virus and the consequent restrictions. However, national representative studies of how the COVID-19 pandemic affects mental health in China are still limited. METHODS: Using two waves of the China Family Panel Studies, we follow the same individuals before and during the pandemic. We compare weighted means using 95% …
Taking care of everyone’s business: Interpreting Sicilian Mafia embedment through spatial network analysis
Mafia-type organisations often have a strong geographical and cultural entrenchment in the territory they belong. However, their analysis as a spatially networked social structure is still missing. A combined socio-spatial network analysis is presented here, through the demise of a large police operation called Operazione Perseo in 2008. This approach is developed in two ways. At first, a visual representation of the social network of this large …
Shooting down the price: Evidence from Mafia homicides and housing prices
In this paper, we estimate the effect of the homicides by the Camorra, the Neapolitan Mafia, on housing prices in Naples. The study develops on a unique panel data set at the administrative district level for the period 2002–2018 of geo-localized homicides involving innocent victims (denoted as IVH), which are treated as exogenous shocks that negatively affect housing demand. We find that the occurrence of such homicides causes a decrease in hous…
Dynamic Effects of Co-Ethnic Networks on Immigrants’ Economic Success
In this paper we investigate how co-ethnic networks affect the economic success of immigrants. Using longitudinal data of immigrants in Germany and including a large set of fixed effects and pre-migration controls to address the possible endogeneity of initial location, we find that immigrants in districts with larger co-ethnic networks are more likely to be employed soon after arrival. This advantage fades after four years, as migrants located i…
Is the productivity premium of internationalized firms technology-driven
We ask whether the productivity advantage of internationalized firms documented by the international trade literature can be interpreted most accurately in terms of proximity to the “technological frontier”. We answer in the affirmative using a methodology (based on mixture models) of unbundling technology and total factor productivity (TFP) by estimating “technology-specific” production function parameters. Exploiting detailed data provided by t…
English as a Second Dialect Policy and Achievement of Aboriginal Students in British Columbia
English as a Second Dialect Policy and Achievement of Aboriginal Students in British Columbia
Since the 1980s, the BC Ministry of Education has offered funding to support the language development of students who speak non-standard dialects of English. In practice, the students who are supported by this funding are almost exclusively Aboriginal, and English as a Second Dialect (ESD) funding has grown to be an important source of supplemental funding for Aboriginal students in many school districts. We exploit the staggered uptake of ESD fu…
How Student Disability Classifications and Learning Outcomes Respond to Special Education Funding Rules: Evidence from British Columbia
In 2002, British Columbia eliminated supplemental grants to school districts for some students with special needs. This study provides estimates of the response of special needs designations and academic performance to this funding change. Using student-level panel data, we find that students were less likely to receive a gifted, moderate behavioural disorder, or mild mental illness designation under the new funding rules. We study standardized t…
The implementation of the European Copyright Directive Library lobby in France
This paper presents a specific case, in other words, the situation in one of the 25 European countries. It goes over the more general aspects that have been presented just a moment ago by my colleague Marco Marandola on the impact for libraries of the implementation of the European Copyright Directive. I have decided to select two aspects. The first part of my paper reviews briefly the French legal background. In the second part, I stress the act…
