Music in Healing
The arts and humanities have recently been recognized as valuable tools in medical education. Despite this, there are few programs that leverage music, and even fewer that leverage classical music, to teach medical humanities concepts. Here, we designed a two-hour session in conjunction with a live classical string quartet to discuss themes related to identity, interprofessional education, active listening, and empathy. A survey consisting of ten…

Implementation and Outcomes of a Train-the-Trainer Program at Behavioral Health Treatment Centers as a Mechanism to Maintain Organizational Capacity to Address Tobacco Use Disorder
Despite prior successful implementation of Taking Texas Tobacco Free (TTTF), an evidence-based tobacco-free workplace program, in local mental health authorities (LMHAs), post-implementation employee attrition necessitated continuing education on tobacco-free policies and tobacco treatment practices. Here, we report on the outcomes of a train-the-trainer program which trained "champions" to deliver tobacco cessation education at their LMHAs. Thre…

C. Loring Brace's writings on the concept of race have been among the most influential within anthropology. A review of the development of Brace's perspective on race shows that his philosophical approaches to fossil and modern human variation are consistent and integrated. Brace's views on race are compared with those of Ashley Montagu and Frank Livingstone, who also proposed eliminating “race” from anthropology, and with those of Stanley Garn a…

Growth in root length of the mandibular canine and premolars in a mixed‐longitudinal orthodontic sample
Numerous studies of dental development focusing on eruption (clinical emergence) exist in the literature, but fewer studies examine dental development as a process extending across years or decades, and root development is commonly assessed using fractional root lengths. Here, we examine the growth of mandibular canine and premolar roots in a mixed‐longitudinal sample of orthodontic patients (77 females and 74 males) from north central Texas. Mul…

Variation in longitudinal diaphyseal long bone growth in children three to ten years of age
Data from the Child Research Council (Denver, CO) were analyzed to model longitudinal growth changes in the humerus, radius, femur, and tibia in 31 boys and 36 girls between 3 and 10 years of age. Multilevel modeling of growth changes allowed efficient estimates of bone size and bone growth variation to be obtained as well as comparisons of growth patterns within and between limbs. The long bones displayed decelerating growth through time, with g…
Skeletal age, dental age, and the maturation of KNM‐WT 15000
The skeleton of the Homo erectus boy from West Lake Turkana, Kenya (KNM‐WT 15000), is remarkably complete, and this individual has thus provided a case study for several researchers examining Homo erectus growth. Using data from a longitudinal study of Montreal French‐Canadian children, it is shown that while dental and skeletal ages match reasonably well at the level of a sample of children, individuals can display differences between skeletal a…

Shape variation of the human pollical distal phalanx and metacarpal
Human distal pollical phalanx form has been associated with tool manufacture, and the broad tuft of this bone in Neanderthals has been suggested to be a climatic adaptation and/or an aid to a tremendously powerful grip. A wide first metacarpal head has also been proposed to be useful in distinguishing tool-dependent hominids from those less reliant on tools. In order to contribute to an evaluation of these hypotheses variation in first metacarpal…
A paradigm's worth of difference? Understanding the impasse over modern human origins
The modern human origins debate within paleoanthropology has become polarized between two dominant models, Recent African Origin (RAO) and Multiregional Evolution (MRE). The debate has persisted and shows no sign of resolution despite the incorporation of new data and dates during the past decade. We examine the reasons for this stalemate, focusing on the presentation of these models by their principal advocates, Christopher Stringer and Milford …
Pattern profile analysis of hominid and chimpanzee hand bones
In a study designed to complement morphological research on hominid hand bones, length and width measurements of the thumb, index, and middle rays were obtained from radiographs of modern human hands. These rays are primary in precision‐gripping postures and are therefore the ones most relevant for investigating evolutionary changes in fine manipulation. Pattern profile analysis allows individuals or samples to be plotted against a reference samp…
Relationship of serum cholesterol and truncal body fat distribution among Mexican Americans is accentuated by obesity
The relationship of body fat distribution to serum cholesterol levels was evaluated in a sample of 3,040 Mexican Americans 18–74 years of age from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) conducted from 1982–1984. Fat distribution was determined by the ratio of trunk to extremity skinfold thicknesses, while the sum of skinfold thicknesses was used as an indicator of total body fat. Results of this study indicate that: 1) Mexi…
Small for gestational age associated with short stature during adolescence
This study examined the relationship between intrauterine growth retardation and adolescent stature in a sample of 1510 White subjects (754 males and 756 females) who were evaluated at birth and at the ages of 15, 16, and 17 years. The subjects were classified into two groups based on birthweight, small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA), corresponding respectively to values below the 10th, and between the 11th an…
Modern human metrical variation in the first three manual rays
This study utilizes radiographic samples of white, black. Mexican-American, and Asian males and females from the Ten State Nutrition Survey to examine the degree and pattern of variation seen in measurements of bones from the three radial hand rays. Pattern profile analysis is used to portray graphically the intersample differences for 44 length and width variables. This technique allows a visual assessment of intersample differences and extends …
Reduction in birth weight associated with smoking among young and older‐age women
This study examined the combined effects of maternal smoking and maternal age on birth weight. A sample of 1,851 white, full‐term infants (37 to 42 weeks) born to primiparous mothers ranging in age from 18 to 41 years was derived from the database of the Child Health and Development Studies (CHDS), available through the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The mothers were classified into three age gro…
