From field to family: Exploring the gendered effect of agricultural mechanization in rural China
A epidemiological trend of chronic kidney disease due to hypertension among adolescents and young adults: Global burden and future 2035 projections
Background: The study aimed to describe the epidemiological trend of chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to hypertension among adolescents and young adults during 1990-2021 worldwide. Additionally, the study seeks to provide comprehensive estimate of the associated risk factors for mortality and to project the burden of disease over the next decade. Methods: We utilized the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) to assess the changing trends of the standard…

Examining the change in the rurality of rural tourism destinations: Evidence from China
Rural tourism destinations that exhibit rurality can effectively enhance their core competitiveness. This study explores the evolving characteristics of rurality in typical rural tourism destinations near Nanjing City. Employing methodologies such as interviews, questionnaire surveys, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, paired sample t-tests, potential conflict index, and cluster analysis, the study reveals that overall rur…

Goods market desirability of minimum wages
This paper presents a general equilibrium model incorporating heterogeneous firms and a perfectly competitive labour market to explore the desirability of minimum wages. We demonstrate that a low minimum wage could enhance social welfare, assuming equal weighting for all individuals. This occurs because the introduction of minimum wages has the potential to mitigate the goods market distortions arising from imperfect competition, firm heterogenei…

Adjustments and Constraints: Biden Administration’s Iran Policy
This article provides an overview of the recent US Iran policies by comparing the US Middle East strategy under the Biden administration to the Trump administration’s approach. Trump’s ‘maximum pressure’ campaign adopted various aggressive policies including withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement and escalating sanction measures against Iran. However, the campaign has proven a failure as it was impeded by Iran’s countermeasures and has damag…
Feature Screening for Massive Data Analysis by Subsampling
Modern statistical analysis often encounters massive datasets with ultrahigh-dimensional features. In this work, we develop a subsampling approach for feature screening with massive datasets. The approach is implemented by repeated subsampling of massive data and can be used for analyzing tasks with memory constraints. To conduct the procedure, we first calculate an R-squared screening measure (and related sample moments) based on subsamples. Sec…
A Note on Distributed Quantile Regression by Pilot Sampling and One-Step Updating
Quantile regression is a method of fundamental importance. How to efficiently conduct quantile regression for a large dataset on a distributed system is of great importance. We show that the popularly used one-shot estimation is statistically inefficient if data are not randomly distributed across different workers. To fix the problem, a novel one-step estimation method is developed with the following nice properties. First, the algorithm is comm…
Voices from the workplace: Practitioners’ perspectives on the role of empathy and care within engineering
This study extends previous work on two related phenomena, empathy and care, within engineering. In two phases, we collected and thematically analyzed semi-structured interviews with 25 practicing engineers in order to understand how they conceptualized empathy and care (Phase 1) and in what ways they perceived empathy and care to exist within or be important to engineering practice (Phase 2). Qualitative outcomes of this study include 3 categori…
Different Models of Hospital–Community Health Centre Collaboration in Selected Cities in China: A Cross-Sectional Comparative Study
Results can inform health service delivery integration efforts in China and provide crucial information for the assessment of similar collaborations in other countries
China's WTO Membership and the Non-Market Economy Status: Discrimination and impediment to China's foreign trade
This article provides a Chinese perspective on the terms of China's WTO accession, highlighting the negative impact of some discriminatory conditions that China accepted in order to join the WTO on its foreign trade and global competitiveness in the last decade. The author uses the non-market economy status of China as a case study to support the argument that these discriminatory conditions imposed on China upon accession have not only impeded t…
Empathy and care within engineering: Qualitative perspectives from engineering faculty and practicing engineers
The purpose of this study was to investigate how empathy and care look within an engineering context from the perspective of (1) existing literature (2) engineering faculty and (3) practicing engineers. The project employed three separate, but interrelated studies, including a summative content analysis of the existing literature, a consensual qualitative research analysis of small group interviews with the engineering faculty, and a consensual q…
