  • Is ‘Jewish Masculinity’ an Oxymoron

Michael S Kimmel, Michael Kimmel•ARTICLE•European Journal of Jewish Studies•2025

  • “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”

    Michael S Kimmel, Michael Kimmel•CHAPTER•Roads Not Taken•2024

The trajectory of the French Revolution was a constant fracturing and splintering into factions after the Regicide. Among the many groups who were mobilized during the Reign of Terror were the sans-culottes, the urban common people, who attempted to revolutionize daily life in France. Before they, too, devolved into a murderous mob, the sans-culottes were perhaps the only group that believed in all three of the elements of the motto of the Revolu…

    Michael S Kimmel•CHAPTER•Privilege•2018

  • Thoughts on the Workplace as a Masculinity Contest

    Open Access•Robin J Ely, Michael S Kimmel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 13

We consider how the research featured in this special issue reveals the deeply emotional nature of men's gender‐identity constructions at work: men qua men feeling threatened and insecure and thus compelled to prove their manliness in survival‐of‐the‐fittest competitions. These papers locate this behavior not in individual bad actors nor in men's supposed biological drives, but rather in the organizational norms and practices that foster masculin…

For this edition of Ask a Feminist, Michael Kimmel and Lisa Wade discuss the role of masculinity in the current political moment, including the rise of Donald Trump and white grievance politics in the United States. A preeminent scholar of masculinity studies, Kimmel analyzes masculinity’s intersections with racism, sexual violence, and backlash politics. Wade, whose work has critically and accessibly interrogated contemporary gender dynamics, sp…

    Dag Ellingsen, Ulla-Britt Lilleaas et al.•ARTICLE•NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 4

In a qualitative study of masculinities in the Norwegian Armed Forces, we found the expected sexual harassment and some more unexpected episodes of what we name solidarity masculinity. But we also uncovered some possible and surprisingly positive effects of male and female conscripts living together in so-called mixed rooms. The rooms seemed to function in a way that promoted mutual understanding, de-sexualization and reduced sexual harassment. O…

Open Access•B Ethan Coston, Bethany M Coston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2012•Cited by: 95•References: 3

When discussing privilege, we often consider it a zero-sum quantity, one either has it or one does not. Since privilege is distributed along a range of axes, we consider three sites in which male privilege is compromised by marginalization by other statuses: disability status, sexuality, and class. Employing a Symbolic Interactionist approach, derived from Erving Goffman's Stigma (1963) , we observe strategies employed by disabled men, gay men an…

    Rachel Kalish, Michael S Kimmel et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Studies•2011•Cited by: 32•References: 13

Hooking up, or sexual activity outside of a committed relationship, has become the normative form of intimacy on American college campuses. Much research has focused on the extent of hooking up, and its effects. We situate hook-ups within the institution of heterosexuality, arguing that it is deeply gendered. Hooking up becomes a mode of homosocial communication, as well as a way for young adults to prove their heterosexuality. Others have pointe…

  • Misframing Men: The Politics of Contemporary Masculinities

    Open Access•Michael S Kimmel•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•2011•Cited by: 16

This past decade has witnessed an extraordinary transformation in men's lives. For years, wave after wave of the women's movement, a movement that reshaped every aspect of American life, produced nary a ripple among men. But suddenly men are in the spotlight. Yet, the public discussions often seem strained, silly, and sometimes flat-out wrong. The spotlight itself seems to obscure as much as it illuminates. Old tired cliches about men's resistanc…

In 2 studies, beliefs supporting the use of violence moderated the association between normative masculine activities and aggressive behavior (Study 1) and normative masculine attitudes and aggressive and homophobic behavior (Study 2) among adolescent boys. These beliefs also moderated the association between normative masculine activities and homophobic behavior among adolescent girls. Consistent with social information processing models, belief…

  • Suicide by mass murder: Masculinity, aggrieved entitlement, and rampage school shootings

    Rachel Kalish, Michael S Kimmel et al.•ARTICLE•Health Sociology Review•2010•Cited by: 30•References: 2

School shootings have become more common in the United States in recent years. Yet, as media portrayals of these ‘rampages’ shock the public, the characterisation of this violence obscures an important point: many of these crimes culminate in suicide, and they are almost universally committed by males. We examine three recent American cases, which involve suicide, to elucidate how the culture of hegemonic masculinity in the US creates a sense of …

  • The Gendered Face of Terrorism

    Open Access•Abby L Ferber, Michael S Kimmel•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 6

What does sociology have to contribute to our understanding of terrorism? As scholars of gender and the Far Right, we believe that we have much to offer the current debates. In this article, we focus both on contemporary cases of terrorism, the attacks of September 11 and the Oklahoma City bombing, and terrorist movements as gendered: as enactments of masculinity. In particular, we focus on the contemporary white supremacist movement, the most da…

    Open Access•Michael S Kimmel, Matthew Mahler•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2003•Cited by: 160•References: 19

Since 1982, there have been 28 cases of random school shootings in American high schools and middle schools. The authors find (a) that the shootings were not a national problem but a series of local problems that occurred in "red states" or counties (places that voted Republican in the 2000 election); (b) that most of the boys who opened fire were mercilessly and routinely teased and bullied and that their violence was retaliatory against the thr…

  • Gender Symmetry” in Domestic Violence: A Substantive and Methodological Research Review

    Open Access•Michael S Kimmel•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2002•Cited by: 84•References: 10

Despite numerous studies that report the preponderance of domestic violence is perpetrated by men against women, other empirical studies suggest that rates of domestic violence by women and men are equivalent. This article explores these claims of gender symmetry in intimate partners'use of violence by reviewing the empirical foundations of the research and critiquing existing sources of data on domestic violence. The author suggests methods to r…

    Open Access•Michael S Kimmel•ARTICLE•Horizontes Antropológicos•1998•Cited by: 63

  • White Men Are This Nation: Right-Wing Militias and the Restoration of Rural American Masculinity

    Open Access•Michael S Kimmel, Michael Kimmel et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2000•Cited by: 59•References: 10

The appearance of right-wing militias was a much-discussed phenomenon during the past decade. Commentators rightly pointed out their rural origins, their lower-middle-class and middle-class composition, and their ideology rooted in racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia, but few, if any, have commented on the most salient aspect of all: that these are movements of men, who use narratives about masculinity as an analytic prism through which…

  • Sexual violence in three pornographic media: Toward a sociological explanation

Martin Barron, Michael S Kimmel et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2000•Cited by: 41•References: 2

This study measures the sexually violent content in magazine, video, and Usenet (Internet newsgroup) pornography. Specifically, the level of violence, the amount of consensual and nonconsensual violence, and the gender of both victim and victimizer are compared. A consistent increase in the amount of violence from one medium to the next is found, although the increase between magazines and videos is not statistically significant. Further, both ma…

    Open Access•Michael S Kimmel•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•1987•Cited by: 22•References: 6

This article examines the variety of men's responses to feminism in late nineteenthand early twentieth-century United States through texts that addressed the claims raised by the turn-of-the-century women's movements. Antifeminist texts relied on traditional arguments, as well as Social Darwinist and natural law notions, to reassert the patriarchal family and to oppose women's suffrage and participation in the public sphere. Masculinist texts sou…

Gender becomes one of the chief organizing principles of local, regional and national resistance to globalization, whether expressed in religious or secular, ethnic or national terms. Since the late eighteenth century, American men have supported women's equality. (see Kimmel and Mosmiller, 1992). Even before the first Woman's Rights Convention at Seneca Falls, New York heralded the birth of the organized women's movement in 1848, American men had begun to argue in favor of women's rights. That celebrated radical, Thomas Paine, for example, mused in 1775 that any formal declaration of independence from England should include w…

Our paper explores the white supremacist movement's reliance upon the western genre to construct white masculinity. We argue that white supremacist discourse rearticulates both the narrative form and content of the classic western. We first examine the formal and substantive themes of the classic western, and then analyze the publications of a wide variety of contemporary white supremacist organizations, including Klan, neo-Nazi, and Christian Id…

North and Thomas seek to explain the rise of the Western world by illuminating the causal importance of an efficient economic organization that guarantees a wide latitude of property rights and both incentives and protection for e…
