Machine learning approaches to racial/ethnic differences in social determinants of mild cognitive impairment and its progression to dementia in the All of Us Research Program
Objective This study examines how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and its progression to dementia across racial/ethnic groups, identifying disparities and key predictors using machine learning approaches. Methods We analyzed data from 83,180 participants aged 50+ in the All of Us Research Program (65,582 White, 6,207 Black, 4,170 Hispanic, 7,221 Other). The sample had mean ages ranging from 62.4 (His…
From social isolation to sarcopenia: Heterogeneous social isolation patterns and inflammatory mediation
Objectives The causal relationship between social isolation and sarcopenia remains unclear. This study investigated the association between social isolation and sarcopenia and explored the mediating role of systemic inflammation. Methods Data were derived from the 2011 and 2015 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, comprising 7,059 community-dwelling participants aged over 45. Sarcopenia was defined according to the Asian W…
Cognitive impairment and contexts: Examining the intersections of social activity participation and neighborhood perceptions
Objectives In this study, we examined the extent to which older adult social activity participation and perceptions of neighborhoods correspond with risks of cognitive impairment with no dementia (CIND) and dementia. Methods We predicted the risk of both CIND and dementia in a series of Cox proportional hazards analyses among older adults across a 10-year period. Utilizing data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS, N = 15,020), we examined w…
Neighborhood Bonding and Bridging Social Capital, Social Activity Participation, and Short-term Cognitive Variability in Later Life
Objectives Investigating social determinants of health and related outcomes may help identify effective and sustainable intervention targets. This study examined whether contextual-level social capital (bonding and bridging capital) and individual-level social participation were associated with short-term cognitive variability, an early indicator of normal and pathological cognitive aging. Methods The sample consisted of urban community-dwelling …
Organizational and non-organizational religious participation and trajectories of cognitive function among older African Americans
These findings illustrate substantial heterogeneity in cognitive aging among older African Americans. Non-organizational religious participation primarily served as a preventive factor among younger participants but functioned more prominently as a coping resource among the oldest participants. These age-related distinctions emphasize the diverse ways in which religiosity could foster cognitive resilience or aid in navigating cognitive decline am…
Neighborhood built environment and loneliness dynamics among older Chinese immigrants in the United States
Findings underscore the nuanced role of walkability and transit access in shaping loneliness among older Chinese immigrants. Addressing loneliness in aging immigrant populations requires multilevel strategies, including inclusive urban design, enhanced social infrastructure, and culturally responsive community engagement
From disconnection to well-being: A longitudinal study on digital access as a social determinant of health for older adults in China
This study recognizes digital inclusion as a key SDoH, emphasizes the structural barriers to digital access, and advocates interventions for enhancing digital literacy, infrastructure, and family/community digital engagement for older adults
