    The Ernis-Evditepe Fortress and Necropolis are situated 80 km. north of modern Van. During our survey in Evditepe, we observed that, like other Early Iron Age strongholds, the site consists of a fortress and a necropolis. The Ernis-Evditepe Necropolis covers a wide area on the northern, northeastern and southeastern slopes of the hill and is the largest known necropolis in Eastern Anatolia.     A total of 15 dog skulls and a number of bones have been discovered in two burial chambers dating from 1,000 BC in the necropolises of the Van-Yoncatepe Castle in eastern Turkey. The finds were a dog skeleton in burial chamber M5 and 14 dog skulls and plenty of bones in burial chamber M6. It was determined on examination that the skeleton found in burial chamber M5 was an 11-12-year female dog, and that the skulls unearthed from burial chamber M6…

    A ceramic oven containing pots and bowls, found in an illegal excavation in 1995 at the southwestern corner of the fortress, demonstrates that these were produced locally. The fact that the kiln was not emptied may indicate that the occupants left the site in a hurry (Belli 1996:149). At first the reason was unclear but after three years of excavating at the fortress we surmised that an unexpected fire caused confusion and people fled in panic. T…
