  • Becoming or Getting by”

Open Access•Andreza Aruska De Souza Santos, Valeria Cristina De Oliveira et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2025•Referencias: 31

Using novel data from a survey with 2,055 Brazilians (aged 16–26 years old), this article explores youth motives to voluntarily join military careers. Our results found that non-White men were more likely to enter the military. Economic affluence negatively influenced prospects for police careers while showing a non-significant positive effect on the armed forces. We also found that individuals with more conservative views and values are more lik…

  • Informal practices in politics and society in Brazil

    Open Access•Andreza Aruska De Souza Santos•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 10

In the social sciences, informality is regularly discussed as a territory: ‘the informal city’. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, precarious informal workers gained attention as people were targeted for cash transfer policies to increase adherence to and diminish the negative impact of social distancing policies. Focusing on informal workers highlighted new discussions about informality. In this Introduction, I discuss theories of informal p…

  • Higher risk of death from Covid-19 in low-income and non-White populations of São Paulo, Brazil

Open Access•Siu Leung Li, Rafael Henrique Moraes Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

Introduction Little evidence exists on the differential health effects of COVID-19 on disadvantaged population groups. Here we characterise the differential risk of hospitalisation and death in São Paulo state, Brazil, and show how vulnerability to COVID-19 is shaped by socioeconomic inequalities. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using hospitalised severe acute respiratory infections notified from March to August 2020 in the Sistema d…

Participatory governance has been used to direct public budget and policy priorities. Grassroots politics also offers democratic pathways for negotiations over permits for businesses such as mining. In this paper, I focus on notions of time in policy-meetings between a mining company, the affected community in the district of Miguel Burnier, Brazil, and mediators between them - members of a municipal council for cultural heritage. I used ethnogra…

  • The Right-Wing Backlash in Brazil and Beyond

    Open Access•Leigh A Payne, Andreza Aruska De Souza Santos•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2020•Citada por: 29•Referencias: 13

Who is entitled to have rights? This essay examines how right-wing movements attempt to prevent individuals, especially women and members of LGBT groups, from accessing equal rights through the use of terms such as “moral worth” and “family values.” At the core of our discussion of the backlash against social rights in Latin America is the need to compare and contrast the case examined here with similar movements outside the region. The vast ente…

  • Risky closeness and distance in two fieldwork sites in Brazil

Andreza Aruska De Souza Santos•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

This article discusses how closeness and distance affected my ethnographic research in two Brazilian cities. I first address the pitfalls I encountered researching Luz, a run-down transportation hub and residential area in São Paulo’s city centre, also known as Crackland for its drug trade and consumption. In Luz, I was confronted with everyday hostility in an environment of unknown others and an ever-changing cityscape: users of cultural offerin…
