Biology of Saryupari Brahmins of Chhattisgarh, Central India
In July-November, 1986, Saryupari Brahmins of Chhattisgarh (Central India) have been investigated for the distribution of ABO blood groups, Rh factor, ABH secretion, PTC taste sensitivity and seven morphological traits. The important findings in brief are as follows: 1. The frequency of O blood group is slightly dominant (38.91%) and gene frequency exhibit r > q > p pattern. Statistical analysis (D/sigma = 0.5447) show that the population is in g…
An epidemiological study of blood pressure and lipid levels among Marwaris of Calcutta, India
This population based study was conducted among the Marwaris of Calcutta, India. A total of 1,096 individuals from 151 randomly selected families were studied. Mean blood pressures were high. About 17% of the population was hypertensive, i.e., systolic blood pressure > 160 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure > 95 mm Hg. The mean value of the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol was 4.75. Comparison with a rural agricultural population …
Investigations on the variability of blood group polymorphisms among sixteen tribal populations from Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, India
Sixteen tribal populations from Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have been typed for the polymorphic blood group systems A1A2B0, MNSs, Rhesus, Kell, Duffy and Diego. The heterogeneity in the distribution of haplotype and allele frequencies, respectively, is partly considerable. It is supposed that this is due to the operation of several microevolutionary factors, such as genetic drift, social and geographic isolation and gene flow. This is …
Genetic differentiation among the three Hindu low caste groups of Malda district, West Bengal, India
Three descendants of Koch, Indo-Mongolid populations, have been studied for their 12 genetic markers of blood group, red cell enzyme and serum protein. Distribution of their phenotype and allele frequencies shows some variants apart from their common alleles. Analysis on genetic material reveals very low differentiation coefficient (GST) value for the total population, and in the distance measure the Poliya and the Tiyor stand close to each other…
Genetic epidemiological study of blood pressure in sedentary rural agriculture population of West Bengal, India
To study the genetic epidmiology of blood pressure (BP), data on 78 families were collected from a sedentary agriculture population of eastern India. The general levels of both systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures are found to be low (mean SBP = 106.41 mm Hg; means DBP = 63.94 mm Hg). Trends of blood pressures with age are similar to those reported earlier (e.g., in the Framingham study). Environmental variables—e.g., occupation and…

Genetic differentiation among four groups of fishermen of the Eastern coast, India
The four endogamous groups of fishermen living around the city of Puri, located on the eastern coast of India, were studied for blood groups, red cell enzymes and serum proteins (11 loci). Only 1.3% of the total diversity among the groups studied is due to differences between them (GST = 0.013). The genetic distances between populations were estimated using Edwards and Cavalli-Sforza's method. The pattern of genetic distance reflects the geograph…
Familial aggregation of blood pressure and anthropometric variables in patrilocal households
Fifty‐three households in a small Indian fishing community were surveyed for blood pressure, pulse rate, and anthropometric measurements (height, weight, and three skinfolds). In addition to nuclear family relationships, correlations for extended family members and in‐laws living within a common household were estimated by maximum likelihood. Based on likelihood ratio tests, the hypothesis that correlations among genetically unrelated pairs from …

A1A2BO, MNSs, Rhesus (C,c,D,E,e), Duffy, Diego; Haptoglobin (Hp), Ceruloplasmin (Cp), Transferrin subtypes (Tf), Gc subtypes (Gc), Gm (1,2,5), Km (1); red cell acid phosphatase (aP), phosphoglucomutase subtypes (PGMi), adenylate ki nase (AK), adenosine deaminase (ADA), esterase D (EsD), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and hae moglobin variants were typed on 237 Siddis from Karnataka (South India), a Negroid popu…
Genetic variation of five blood group polymorphisms in ten populations of Assam, India
Six Mongoloid and four Caucasoid populations of Assam, India, were examined for A1A2BO, Rhesus, Duffy and Diego blood groups. The distribution of their phenotypes and allele frequencies are presented. In the perspective of the ethnographic background, the results have been discussed in terms of genetic variability among these populations and probable reasons for its existence. The major groups, namely Caucasoids and Mongoloids, appear to form two…
Immunoglobulin (Gm and Km) allotypes in nine endogamous groups of West Bengal, India
Blood samples from 898 individuals of nine endogamous groups of West Bengal, India were typed for determining the haplotypic structure in the gamma-light chain (Gm) and kappa-light chain (Km) of immunoglobulin (IgG). The Gm haplotype frequencies detected by Glm (1), Glm (2) and G3m (5) markers suggest that in this eastern state of India there is considerable variation of frequencies of the typical Mongoloid haplotype Gm1,5, which shows a high inc…

Incidence of red–green colour blindness in some populations of Delhi, Maharashtra and West Bengal: An examination of the selection relaxation hypothesis
The term colour blindness is generally used to describe the lack of sensitivity to colours. Although there are instances of total colour blindness, in most cases the people confuse red or green, and this defect is an X-linked trait. This colour vision anomaly is widely used as a genetic marker in the study of human variation, and is frequently cited as ‘relaxed selection’ according to the Post (1962) and Pickford (1963) hypothesis.

The effect of parity on placental weight and birth weight: Interaction with placental alkaline phosphatase polymorphism
The effect of parity on placental weight and birth weight is examined through a series of birth records from an Indian population in Calcutta. Placental weight and birth weight increase with parity, the maximum increment occurring between parities 1 and 2. This is compatible with a hypothesis of sensitization of the mother to foetal, paternally derived, antigens. The three common placental alkaline phosphatase enzymic genotypes have no effect on …
The Factorial Structure of Wechsler's Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence at Successive Age Levels
S ummary . A factor analysis of the correlation matrix for the subtests of WPPSI was carried out for each of the age groups between 4 and 61⁄2 years. The data were obtained from the WPPSI standardisation samples. In each analysis, three factors were extracted and two of these, after equimax rotation, were found to give patterns of loadings which were similar for all age groups. The rotated factors were identified as verbal intelligence, space per…
