  • The hidden messages concealed in the 1970s stamp series ‘Landscapes of Israel’

    Gad Schaffer•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2023

This study analyses the Israeli stamp series ‘Landscapes of Israel’ issued between 1971–1980, revealing the series’ geographical pattern, themes and hidden messages. The stamp images and information folders were critically examined within their historical context. The analysis revealed that the spatial distribution of sites also included captured territories, and by this Israel indirectly drew its own borders. Moreover, colour value was used to h…

  • Ideology, environment, and open space in conflict arenas: The discrepancies and harmonizing strategies of West Bank Israeli settlers

    Open Access•Tamar Arieli, Gad Schaffer•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2023•References: 14

The natural environments of conflict arenas often embody invisible contexts for political analysis. This study questions how environmental agendas are framed and acted upon by mid-level environmental professionals engaged in land-focused conflict. Ideological attachment to contested land together with engagement in the polemics of conflict, facilitate unique engagements with environmental agendas, particularly regarding open space preservation. • Agricultural Land-Use Changes in the Judean Region from the End of the Ottoman Empire to the End of the British Mandate: A Spatial Analysis

    Open Access•Gad Schaffer•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Vines and olives are two important and widespread traditional agricultural crops that are also connected to the Judeo–Christian–Muslim tradition. The goal of the research was to demonstrate the importance of using cartographical sources to obtain a more accurate and complete view of the past. To this end, the aims were: (1) to reconstruct the former agricultural land-use in three periods, 1873–1874, 1917, and 1943–1945; (2) to analyze the differe…

  • Reconstructing nineteenth century landscapes from historical maps—the Survey of Western Palestine as a case study

    Gad Schaffer, Noam Levin•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 33

Geographic information systems allow the extraction and quantitative analysis of information from historical maps. The aims of this research were to examine the completeness of information represented on the 1881 Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF) map, to quantitatively reconstruct the landscape of nineteenth century Palestine and to explore whether spatial patterns in land cover/land use can be partially explained statistically by physical and hum…

  • Quantifying the completeness of and correspondence between two historical maps: A case study from nineteenth-century Palestine

Gad Schaffer, Mor Peer et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Reconstructing past landscapes from historical maps requires quantifying the accuracy and completeness of these sources. The accuracy and completeness of two historical maps of the same period covering the same area in Israel were examined: the 1:63,360 British Palestine Exploration Fund map (1871-1877) and the 1:100,000 French Leves en Galilee (LG) map (1870). These maps cover the mountainous area of the Galilee (northern Israel), a region with …
