Fashion Storytelling and the Aesthetics of Queer Stealth in Jenin
Dababeer Nest is a fashion collective founded in Jenin by two young women committed to using clothing as a medium of creative resistance. The work of the collective, which has been put on hold for the time being, reveals how, before the unleashing of Israel’s genocidal violence in 2023, fashion was being used in this locale to animate the struggle for Palestinian liberation. In light of the ongoing invasions and planned annexation of the West Ban…
Starved for pleasure: The Fashion Magazine as a Desirous Queer Archive
Bringing queer affect theory to bear on the history of fashion magazines, I track how in the 1990s Dutch -an independent fashion publication which became increasingly popular across Europe and the United States at the turn of the century -began to interrogate the visual ideologies of the fashion system. In a historical moment in which the sense of relief brought to the LGBTQ community by the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy coincided with t…

White Trash”: Gestures and Profanations in the Visual Economy of Fashion
In this article, a photo story depicting “white trash” subjects in the act of defying middle-class proprieties of dress and manners serves as a case study for a critical exploration of the performative registers through which working-class bodies figure as agents of social sedition in the visual economy of fashion. The unglamorous and confrontational bodies in Memory—shot by Alexei Hay and Justine Parsons for Dutch in 2000—enact a parody of profe…
On Sequins and Shit: The Epistemology of Radical Dress in Mario Mieli’s Transsexual Utopia
This article explores the work of theorist, activist, and performer Mario Mieli through the lens of fashion, unearthing the central function that radical dress occupies in his gay communist project. I focus in particular on how, within Mieli's queer utopianism, radical transvestism operates as an ethico-political praxis with the purpose of challenging capitalism and liberating Eros. On the one hand, fashion is condemned by Mieli with arguments at…
Tarrying with the elephant: Queer villainy and aesthetic pleasure in Steven Klein’s photography
Through a close reference to Steven Klein’s photo spread ‘John Robinson’ for L’Uomo Vogue in 2003, this article tracks the appearance of the fictional character of the queer villain in fashion editorial photography. It discusses specifically how the register of ‘affectlessness’ is embodied and aesthetically performed by the queer villain. Affectlessness is contextualized within the repertoire of neutral affects that were circulated in fashion pho…
Eccentric Feelings: Little Girls' Pleasures on the Feminist Fashion Set
In the face of commercial fashion photography's contribution to the shaping of the gendered public fantasy of the child, this article quarries, through a perspective shaped by queer affect theory, the kinds of figurations that in independent fashion magazines have stimulated alternative ways of thinking and feeling in relation to children. The case study, or scene, through which this analysis is conducted is ‘Juweeltje,’ a fashion editorial sprea…
Thinking fashion photographs through queer affect theory
In this article, I suggest that the commonly used approaches to the study of fashion photographs could be fruitfully enriched by juxtaposing them with affect theory. I conduct a theoretical investigation of the benefits that affect theory, and in particular the strand articulated by queer theorists, may bring to the reflections on fashion photographs. I do so in a twofold way: by intertwining traditional visual analysis with an affective reading …
