Governing inequality: Tax perceptions, redistributive preferences, and expectations of the state among political elites in Mexico
Determinants of support for reintroducing inheritance taxes in Mexico
Using an original representative survey of 3,179 participants, we study the determinants of support for reintroducing inheritance taxation in Mexico. Two scenarios are analysed: a universal tax and a progressive tax applied only to inheritances exceeding USD 1 million (purchasing power parity [PPP]). While support for the universal tax is low (13.3 per cent), the progressive tax garners significant backing (41.8 per cent), reflecting a preference…
Deserving privilege: A decomposition of positional legitimation among Mexican elites
Solving Inequality by Acculturating the Poor? Mexican Elites' (Un)Faltering Adherence to Education Under Changing Social and Political Conditions
In this article, we analyze the representations of education that Mexican economic elites uphold. Our objective is to know if such representations have changed after the impact of two shocks: on the one hand, the discursive change of the federal government in matters of social policy after the arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the presidency of Mexico; on the other hand, the effects of the transition to a virtual learning modality during …
Not in the Eye of the Beholder: Racialization, Whiteness, and Beauty Standards in Mexico
This article explores the role “whiteness” takes on in Mexico, where colonial, religious, and social heritages elevate it as an aesthetic ideal, simultaneously denying its underlying racism. It argues that skin tone is one of many physical and nonphysical features that together shape the concept of whiteness in a context of fluid, relational, and intertwined categories of class and racial classifications. Women in particular are pressured to “whi…
Life on the Edge: Elites, Wealth and Inequality in Sonora 1871-1910
This paper engages with and aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion regarding the role of economic and political elites in inequality dynamics and their reproduction over time. We reconstruct the distribution of wealth employing a sample of wills from the El Colegio de Sonora database covering the period of 1871-1910. We show that the rapid industrialisation and modernisation process that occurred in northern Mexico during the late-19 th and…
Privilege at Play. Class, Race, Gender, and Golf in Mexico.
