Fathering in a Pandemic
COVID-19 interventions disrupted family life, disproportionately affecting low-income Black fathers. Although family relationships are critical aspects of men’s mental health and overall well-being, studies examining the effect of the pandemic from a Black fathering lens are sparse. This study explored Black fathers’ experiences and adaptive responses to fathering during the pandemic, highlighting mental health consequences of their experience. D…

Promoting Authentic Academic—Community Engagement to Advance Health Equity
Meaningful community engagement is critical to achieving the lofty goal of health equity. Nonetheless, implementing the principles of community engagement is not easy. Attempting to implement best practices for collaborating on transdisciplinary teams and working with community partners can be challenging, particularly in locales that have a long history of strained university-community relationships. The purpose of this paper is to provide addit…
Illness spillovers of lethal police violence
Police violence is a pressing public health problem. To gauge the illness associations of police killings - the most severe form of police brutality, we compile a unique multilevel dataset that nests individual-level health data from the 2009-2013 New York City Community Health Survey (nij = 39,267) within neighbourhood-level data from 2003 to 2012 EpiQuery Vital Statistics (nj = 34). Using weighted hierarchical generalized linear models, we asse…

The Evolution of #BlackLivesMatter
On August 9, 2014 Michael Brown was killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. Wilson stated that Brown attacked him. The way the police department and the local government handled the case involving the death of Michael Brown galvanized the formation of a social movement that is termed #BlackLivesMatter. The 36 …

The vitality of social media for establishing a research agenda on black lives and the movement
Social media provides scholars with important portals into the lives of marginalized communities and the movements organized to combat issues of race and racism in society. However, how to incorporate the seemingly unwieldy amount of social media data for research in our fields can pose challenges to further clarify how people navigate our social world and the issues with in it, but also how they organize to push for social change and equality. I…
Descriptive Analysis of the 2014 Race-Based Healthcare Disparities Measurement Literature
Visible and Invisible Trends in Black Men's Health
Over the past two decades, there has been growing interest in improving black men's health and the health disparities affecting them. Yet, the health of black men consistently ranks lowest across nearly all groups in the United States. Evidence on the health and social causes of morbidity and mortality among black men has been narrowly concentrated on public health problems (e.g., violence, prostate cancer, and HIV/AIDS) and determinants of healt…
“Racism?!?. . . Just Look at Our Neighborhoods”
Recent events in Ferguson underscore the need to better understand the unique challenges, stressors, and coping mechanisms of African American men. To this end, a focus group study was conducted in Saint Louis, a few miles from Ferguson. Although numerous stress-related themes were discussed, racial discrimination and structural racism emerged as pervasive stressors among these men. Participants described experiences of discrimination in multiple…

A meta-analysis of social capital and health
Social capital refers to various levels of social relationships formed through social networks. Measurement differences have lead to imprecise measurement. A meta-analysis of eligible studies assessing the bivariate association between social capital and self-reported health and all-cause mortality was performed. Thirty-nine studies met inclusion criteria, showing social capital increased odds of good health by 27 percent (95% confidence interval…
Trust, Medication Adherence, and Hypertension Control in Southern African American Men
We examined the relationship between trust in the medical system, medication adherence, and hypertension control in Southern African American men. The sample included 235 African American men aged 18 years and older with hypertension. African American men with higher general trust in the medical system were more likely to report better medication adherence (odds ratio [OR] = 1.06), and those with higher self-efficacy were more likely to report be…
