  • Transgender Bodies are the Battleground

    Open Access•Kaitlin Kelly-Thompson, Amber Lusvardi•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2025•References: 7

Legislation that seeks to restrict the ability of transgender people to fully participate in society has proliferated across state legislatures in the last four years. In legislative sessions throughout the United States, legislators have argued in favor of denying transgender people access to public facilities, sports, health care, and even their own guardians. What can these debates tell us not only about the backlash against transgender people…

  • Dimensions of Transnational Feminism

    Open Access•Kaitlin Kelly-Thompson, Amber Lusvardi et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Politics•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 50

The importance and impact of feminist mobilization across borders is well documented, but the impact of autonomy as an aspect of such organizing has not been explored in the transnational context. We argue that to understand the impact of transnational feminist mobilization, at least two distinct types of feminist mobilization require further conceptual development and empirical exploration in the transnational context, namely, autonomous as cont…

  • Feminist waves, global activism, and gender violence regimes

    Open Access•Laurel Weldon, Amber Lusvardi et al.•ARTICLE•Women s Studies International Forum•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 22

Global waves of activism are powerful social forces shaping - and shaped by- policy and politics worldwide. Such waves are constituted not by a single movement or campaign but rather comprise national, local and transnational organizations and networks of activists. We lack the conceptual underpinnings necessary to fully capture the impact of such a diffuse and complex phenomenon. This prevents scholars from fully grasping the ways that waves sha…

  • Domestic workers from margin to center

Srijani Datta, Summer Forester et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2022

(***Special Edition Gendered Pandemic)In India, domestic workers' movements advocated for their own and other workers’ rights both before and during the pandemic. Over the course of the pandemic, however, the political landscape and degree of disunity among workers changed. Despite dwindling resources and a hostile political environment that offered paltry prospects for success, domestic workers persisted in protesting for improved conditions. We…

  • Drive-By Solidarity

    Jared M Wright, Kaitlin Kelly-Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Contention•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This article offers a theoretical and empirical exploration of a form of solidarity in which one group spontaneously mobilizes in support of another, unrelated group. It is a fleeting solidarity based not on shared identity but on temporarily aligned goals, one aimed less at persistence and more at short-term impact. We call this drive-by solidarity because of its spontaneous, unilateral, and unsolicited nature. We argue that it is a “thinner” fo…

  • New Dimensions of Global Feminist Influence

    Open Access•Summer Forester, Kaitlin Kelly-Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 10•References: 57

Feminist mobilization, crucial for advancing women's human rights, has increased in all world regions since 1975. However, we do not know enough about the global impact of this mobilization because we lack adequate databases to explore the ways that feminist mobilization interacts with other factors that enhance and limit women's rights, such as democracy, intergovernmental processes, and transnational, regional organizing. Our ability to explore…

  • Active Solidarity

    Open Access•R L Einwohner, Kaitlin Kelly-Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Social Politics International…•2019•Cited by: 30•References: 20

While solidarity lies at the heart of collective action, it is not easily achieved. Social movements are characterized not only by difference within activist ranks but also by power asymmetries that reflect broader domination and distrust. The concept of intersectional solidarity is central to contemporary social justice movements’ efforts to negotiate these divisions, but how can it be achieved? To answer this question, we offer some guidelines …
