Diasporic archive and archival diaspora
This article examines how community audiovisual archiving shapes the production and representation of collective identity in a diasporic setting. Grounded in ethnographic fieldwork among Polish Highlanders in Chicago, the study contrasts a bottom-up audiovisual Polish Highlanders Archive run by Władysław Mrowca with the documentation practices of the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America. Mrowca’s Archive operates partly as a complement to…

‘Abandoned’ things
In the twilight of and right after World War II millions of Germans were expelled from areas initially called the Recovered Territories, and later – the Western and Northern Lands in Poland. This article focuses on the property left behind by Germans. It investigates the experiences of the Poles who directly and actively took part in the practices of appropriation of German objects. The analysis is based on memoirs submitted to the contest for di…
Do spółdzielni produkcyjnej i z powrotem.
Between Hospitality and Hostility
In this article, I propose the category of 'hospitable things', and argue that it can improve our understanding of the relationships between subjects and objects in the situation of migration. The analysis uses a case study of Polish migration to territories of pre-war Germany and the Free City of Danzig – the so-called Recovered Territories [Ziemie Odzyskane] – in the twilight of World War II. Based on primary sources from the time, I scrutinise…

Bazaars and Found Objects
Because of the specific political and economic situation, in the period immediately after World War II Poland was characterized by a low standard of living, difficulties in obtaining supplies of basic products, limited opportunities to travel abroad and the arrival of foreign aid packages which fueled consumer desires. This paper explores how clothes were used and valued at a time of shortage, and particularly the way that the bazaar was seen as …
Deconstruction in contemporary fashion design
One of the most important phenomena in fashion, which practically forced the researchers to rethink their former language, is deconstruction. Appearing almost in parallel with deconstruction in architecture it uncovered previously unseen fissure in the discourse used in constructing the object of research. Deconstruction is usually described as one of the many fast-changing trends in fashion, but fashion scholars rarely pay attention to the sourc…
