To conduct the analysis, we used a mixed methodology based on surveys…
El potencial innovador de los pequeños municipios de la teoría a la práctica
Situados en un contexto de creciente complejidad, los pequeños municipios se ven sometidos a la necesidad de aprovechar su potencial innovador. How the spatial and the institutional factors impact on the outcomes of greenways? The cases of Girona and Ojos Negros
This article describes how the socio-spatial context and institutional factors affect the outcomes produced by greenways. Using the case study approach, it analyses the design and management of two long greenways in Spain: the Girona and Ojos Negros Greenways. Even though the spatial context is relevant, institutional factors have a prominent role in the success of the Greenway. If the greenway is designed and constructed by a single existing sta…
Immigrant Integration Policies in Catalonia (1993-2017)
This article analyzes the political frames of Catalan integration policies that were developed from 1993 to 2017. It explores the way some of the major political issues and concepts surrounding immigration have been constructed in a minority nation. Based on qualitative analysis of the main political documents approved by the Generalitat de Catalunya, we suggest that Catalonia has developed a coherent and inclusive political discourse, based on t…
Local consultations on public space management
In the last few years the number of local consultations has increased considerably in Catalonia. This formula was extended, from 2014 onwards, not only due to the knock-on effect of the self-determination referendums but also in order to resolve contentious issues related to the symbolic and urban management of public spaces. In this article we present the result of the analysis of four case studies, from which we can conclude that the consultati…
Citizenship and immigrant anti-rumour strategies
This article analyses the case of the Barcelona Anti-Rumour Network, an initiative promoted by the City Council and social organizations, in order to deal with the uncontrolled proliferation of rumours, prejudices and stereotypes about immigration. Rumours convey false information with the aim of exploiting the fears of citizens often disconcerted in the face of the changes brought about the arrival of a considerable number of foreign immigrants.…
Perspectives on the Reception of Immigrants in the Catalan Cross-Border Area (Franco-Spanish Border)
This article is based on ethnographic research in a cross-border region of Mediterranean Europe distributed between the French and Spanish states. Specifically, these are two neighbouring regions, with a shared historical past, where the presence of migrants crossing the border from south to north or arriving from other points of origin has initiated deployment of welcoming actions by humanitarian organisations and local administrations. However,…
