Beyond a technical fix: Reflecting on a feminist “Parallel” self-assessment approach to integrating gender into a large-scale scientific research project
Purpose Gender equality (GE) in research raises fundamental questions for existing research structures and norms. We ask how conventional science can meaningfully adopt a gender perspective that would “undo” much of what is considered sacred to the nature of science. This paper reflects on the challenges and opportunities of taking a feminist-inspired approach to integrating a gender perspective into a large-scale scientific research project. We …
Placement experiences as identity work: Crafting Fit With Professional Possibilities
Placement as a form of work-integrated learning is a valued element of undergraduate education. Prior work explores how placement provides a site for developing professional values, skills and competences as well as identifying how students build awareness of professional requirements. Greater focus on how such processes of awareness are realised, negotiated and enacted is still required. This study frames student placement experiences as enablin…
Context matters: Problematizing the policy‐practice interface in the enactment of gender equality action plans in universities
This study argues for recognition of the constitutive role of context in shaping the dynamics of the policy‐practice interface in the field of gender equality in universities. Using a comparative and reflective case‐study approach, we draw on our experiences, as action‐researchers, of developing and implementing Gender Equality Action Plans (GEAPs) in four universities in four different European countries and we explore the role of national and l…
Am I lazy, a drama queen or depressed? A journey through a pluralistic approach to analysing accounts of depression
The application of Pluralism in Qualitative Research (PQR) allows for a multi-perspective approach to understanding the nuanced social and psychological phenomenon. The complexity of what it means to qualitatively analyse and respond to sensitive data from the reflexive position of the analyst, is the focus of this paper. We introduce previous work in pluralism, and data from ReachOut.com, an online resource for young people in need of mental hea…
Problematizing the authentic self in conceptualizations of emotional dissonance
With exhortations to be ‘your authentic self’ proliferating in workplaces what does this mean for emotion and identity management at work? This article explores the relationship between emotional labour and identity. It focuses on the tension or ‘emotional dissonance’ that can be experienced when a job role requires the display of organizationally appropriate emotions. Experiences of emotional dissonance are examined through in-depth interviews a…
When is a bed not a bed? Exploring the interplay of the material and virtual in negotiating home-work boundaries
Working from home is often associated with possibilities of anytime-anyplace working and with a fusion of work and home. In this empirical paper, we explore how the sociomaterial contexts of home-working define and tether what is possible for home-workers in their negotiations with others. Drawing on qualitative data sets, Wengerian concepts are used by exploring the role of boundary objects and brokering in negotiating temporal and spatial bound…
Naming the parts: A case-study of a gender equality initiative with academic women
Purpose – This paper aims to seek to contribute to current debates about the effectiveness of different types of gender equality interventions in the academic context. This paper presents an argument for the need to move beyond an individual-structural dichotomy in how such interventions are perceived. Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on an action-research case-study, the Through the Glass Ceiling project, to challenge the idea that …
Positioning in Practice: Understanding Participation in the Social World
In this paper we explore the possibilities of building on the complementarities of practice and discourse, specifically community of practice and discursive positioning, as a way of developing accounts of the child's experience in the classroom. Our accounts are based on interpreting extracts of classroom practice which are drawn from a broader project concerned with describing participation in schooling. Our aim is. to develop conceptual resourc…
