  • The indirect global warming potential of methane oxidation in the IPCC’s sixth assessment report

Open Access•Iván Muñoz, Jannick Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Greenhouse-gas emission (GHG) metric values for methane in the sixth assessment report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) include the indirect effect associated to the oxidation of methane to CO 2 . An analysis of the figures provided by the IPCC reveals they assume that in average 75% of methane is ultimately oxidized to CO 2 , while the remaining 25% is converted to intermediate degradation products, most notably formaldehy…

  • Development of the ¡Vamos por Mas! parenting program to prevent substance use among Chilean adolescents

Open Access•Jessica K V Meyer, Amaia Bernard Ortiz de Rozas et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2023

In Chile, the prevalence of tobacco, alcohol and drug use among adolescents is very high. Decades of research indicate that parenting interventions reduce these risky behaviors. However, there are no parenting interventions validated in Chile to prevent adolescent substance use. This article reports the development of the ¡Vamos por Mas! (¡VxM!) program following the recommendations of the Medical Research Council’s framework for designing and ev…

  • Investigating cranial morphological variation of early human skeletal remains from Chile

    Open Access•Susan C Kuzminsky, Omar Reyes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 65

OBJECTIVES: Archaeological and genetic research has demonstrated that the Pacific Coast was a key route in the early colonization of South America. Research examining South American skeletons >8000 cal BP has revealed differences in cranial morphology between early and late Holocene populations, which may reflect distinct migration events and/or populations. However, genetic, cultural, and some skeletal data contradict this model. Given these dis…

  • Genetic Analysis of Archeological Maize From the Site of San Lorenzo (Azapa, Chile)

    Open Access•Wilson Huanca-Mamani, Wilson Huanca‐Mamani et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2015

We report the first genetic analysis of archeological maize specimens from the site of San Lorenzo (1,500-700 BP) (Azapa valley, Arica, Chile). Ancient DNA was successfully isolated from 11 archeological maize grains. The Alcohol dehydrogenase 2 (Adh2) gene was analyzed because it has a highly variable region due to the presence of a microsatellite region around -28 to -8, which consists of GA repeats that may be present in three types GA n , GA …

  • Life Cycle Assessment of Water Supply Plans in Mediterranean Spain

Open Access•Iván Muñoz, Llorenç Milà‐i‐Canals et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2010

Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to compare the current water supply planning in Mediterranean Spain, the so‐called AGUA Programme, with its predecessor, the Ebro river water transfer (ERWT). Whereas the ERWT was based on a single interbasin transfer, the AGUA Programme excludes new transfers and focuses instead on different types of resources, including seawater and brackish water desalination and wastewater reuse, among others. The study in…

  • Consider a Spherical Man

Open Access•Iván Muñoz, Llorenç Milà I Canals et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2008

Emissions derived from human digestion of food and subsequent excretion are very relevant from a life cycle perspective, and yet they are often omitted from food life cycle assessment (LCA) studies. This article offers a simple model to allocate and include these emissions in LCAs of specific foodstuffs. The model requires basic food composition values and calculates the mass and energy balance for carbon, water, nutrients (mainly nitrogen [N] an…

  • Seven Chinchorro mummies and the prehistory of northern Chile

    Open Access•Arthur C Aufderheide, Iván Muñoz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1993•Cited by: 18•References: 3

The mummification methods of an ancient maritime population on the northern coast of Chile are reviewed and the findings in an additional seven individuals are reported. Members of this cultural group, Chinchorro, practiced a selective, elaborate form of artificial mummification which persisted more than 4,000 years. Its complexity diminished with time, gradually disappearing after 2,000 B. C. One of the seven individuals herein reported is a rat…
