Motivations and Justifications of Intimate Partner Violence among Young Black Women Attending HBCUs
This study examined the motivations and justifications of IPV engagement among 125 Black women (Mage = 20.32, SD = 1.68) attending Historically Black Colleges/Universities. Two research aims assessed: 1) perceived motivations and acceptable justifications for IPV; and 2) relationships between the frequency of violence and contextual variables. We hypothesized that more IPV experiences would result in more behavior justification and increased sexu…
An Intersectional Approach to Understanding Black Women’s Motivations to Attend a Historically Black College for Women
Historically, women of African descent had limited entry into U.S. colleges, contributing to the emergence of women’s historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Today, little is known about Black students’ reasons for attending women’s HBCUs. Adopting a Black Feminist Thought framework, the current research examined the relationship between Black women’s racial and gender identity centralities and their race- and gender-related reasons…
An Exploratory Examination of the Ubiquity of the "Strong Black Woman" Schema
Research has shown that internalization of the Strong Black Woman (SBW) Schema is associated with negative psychological outcomes, such as depression and anxiety. The current study aimed to determine the ubiquity of the SBW Schema by exploring the extent to which Black women who endorse schema characteristics do so consistently or differently across demographic characteristics including age, income level, marital status, and motherhood status. Bl…

Diary Study on Microaggressions, Identity Shifting, and Mental Health among Black Women in STEM Graduate Programs During Covid-19
Black women in STEM graduate programs may develop coping strategies, such as identity shifting, to minimize gendered racial stressors, especially in the context of COVID-19. Identity shifting is the process of altering one’s speech, behavior, perspective, and appearance. Past studies found a positive association between identity shifting and mental health outcomes among young Black women; however, research on the mental health of Black women in S…
Black Women's Body Image
This paper serves as the introduction to a special issue on Black women's body image. Today, controlling images of Black women, such as the Jezebel, Mammy, and Sapphire stereotypes, are evident in controversial public and corporate policies regarding natural hair choices, differential judicial outcomes for darker-skinned Black women, and inequitable responses to Black women's COVID-19 symptoms and maternal health experiences. In response to these…
The Influence of Gendered Racial Identity Centrality on Gendered Racism and Identity Shifting Among Black Undergraduate Women at a HBCU
Black women often experience gendered racism, the intersection of racism and sexism. A coping strategy used to offset the negative consequences associated with gendered racism is known as identity shifting, the process of altering how one talks (code switching) and acts. However, scholars have theorized that gendered racial identity centrality, the extent to which both one's race and gender identities are important to one's self-image, serves as …
Initial Construction and Validation of the Identity Shifting for Black Women Scale
In this study, we aimed to develop and validate the Identity Shifting for Black Women Scale (ISBWS), which assesses the process of altering one’s speech, perceptions, behaviors, and appearance to navigate experiences of discrimination and to enhance intraracial relationships. In Study 1, data from 356 Black women in the United States were used for exploratory factor analysis. Exploratory factor analysis results supported a 15-item, two-factor sol…

Alcohol consumption among rural African American and White adolescents
Although studies have examined ethnic differences in psychosocial factors and adolescent alcohol use, most have not examined these relationships for rural adolescents. The Community Drug and Alcohol Survey (CDAS) was completed by 23,163 rural adolescents attending African American secondary schools. Multilevel analysis tested the hypothesis of stronger relationships of peer use and religiosity with alcohol use and a weaker relationship for parent…
