This article draws on research on a situated commoning project in a post-industrial area in Rome, Italy, to explore how contemporary activist practices complicate p…

Located in the Prenestino neighborhood of Rome, Italy, the former chemical-textile plant Ex-SNIA Viscosa has been a site of labor exploitation, toxicity, and struggle since the 1920s. Comprising postindustrial ruins, an urban lake, and myriad species, the area has been reclaimed by activists engaged in a project of governance from below. This essay begins by exploring how the entwinement of fascist biopolitics and the chemical industry that occur…

  • Between Pachamama and Mother Earth

    Open Access•Miriam Tola•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 23

Focusing on contemporary Bolivia, this article examines promises and pitfalls of political and legal initiatives that have turned Pachamama into a subject of rights. The conferral of rights on the indigenous earth being had the potential to unsettle the Western ontological distinction between active human subjects who engage in politics and passive natural resources. This essay, however, highlights some paradoxical effects of the rights of nature…

  • Species, Nature, and the Politics of the Common

    Miriam Tola•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2017•References: 7

This essay discusses Paolo Virno's anchoring of the common in the linguistic faculties of Homo sapiens. It explores how Virno's figure of the anthropos intersects the hegemonic model of Man that largely underwrites the Anthropocene concept. In particular, it suggests that Virno engages species thinking without sufficiently addressing how it emerged in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries within global circuits of exploitation that shaped the c…

  • Composing with Gaia

    Open Access•Miriam Tola•ARTICLE•PhaenEx•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 11

This essay brings the work of Isabelle Stengers into the fold of feminism to propose a feminist politics of the earth that disrupts the fantasy of human exceptionalism underpinning much Anthropocene discourse. I begin by situating Stengers's political use of Gaia theory in current debates on the Anthropocene. Next, I show how Stengers's reworking of Gaia helps in reconsidering the relations between two bodies of feminist theory-Deleuzian feminism…
