Associations Between Sociosexuality and Intoxicated Sex and Unprotected Sex
BACKGROUND: Sociosexuality reflects behaviors, attitudes, and desires related to casual sex with multiple, concurrent, novel partners. Research on whether people high in sociosexuality are less likely to engage in safer sex practices (e.g., unprotected sex) is mixed, but there is evidence that those high in sociosexuality consume more alcohol than their peers, and drinking is associated with less likelihood of engaging in safer sex. Here we teste…
High in the Cloud
OBJECTIVE: The use of crowdsourcing for addiction research has increased exponentially in recent years, but the extent to which the populations we expect results to generalize to might be engaging in substance use while participating in remote research has not been formally quantified. Understanding rates of day-of-study substance use on crowdsourcing platforms may be especially relevant given immediately recent use can alter cognitive and behavi…
Sexual Activity and Sexual Well-Being Among Sober Adults
Objectives: To explore the relationship between experiences of stigma and sexual activity and sexual well-being among sober individuals. Methods: Two-hundred and thirty-eight sexually active, sober adults reported on their sobriety length, experiences of sobriety stigma, sexual activity, and sexual well-being. Results: Sobriety length was not related to either outcome. However, sobriety stigma was negatively related to sexual activity and sexual …
Stigma Toward Consensual Non-Monogamy
Consensually non-monogamous (CNM) romantic and sexual relationships tend to be stigmatized. The present research examined this stigma across two studies. First, we qualitatively explored the specific ways that people in CNM relationships report experiencing stigma using thematic analysis and identified the following four themes: Expressions of discomfort/disapproval of CNM, Loss of resources/threatening behaviors, Character devaluation, and Relat…
Lady Day on Screen
Jazz singer Billie Holiday (1915 – 1959) is a hugely influential figure. The impact of her vocal craft – particularly her distinctive timbre, adroit use of rubato, and compellingly emotional interpretations – can be traced across subsequent generations of singers (Szwed 2015). However, details of her turbulent personal life often overshadow explorations of her musical legacy. The most recent depiction of Lady Day’s life on screen, Lee Daniels’ Th…
A woman left lonely”
American singer Janis Joplin (1943–1970) is famed for her impressively raw vocals, intense performance style, and as a pioneering woman in rock. She is perhaps equally well-known for her hedonistic philosophy and her tragic death from a heroin overdose when she was 27. Using newspaper coverage of significant events in Joplin’s career as well as biographies and documentaries, an overall arc can be traced which demonstrates the changing reception o…
‘A New Career’
David Bowie’s swansong album Blackstar occupies a unique position in its proximity to the artist’s death: just two days. It thus provides an opportunity to examine how music, nostalgia, and mortality interact. Combining study into the links between music and nostalgia and analysis of use of quotation, I propose a reading of a ‘dual effect’ in which the track ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’ explores themes of nostalgia and mortality whilst encourag…
Cross‐boundary working
This paper reviews the policy developments impacting on professional roles and boundaries in health and social care. • A macro‐political analysis is used to offer a challenging critique to many of the assumptions associated with cross‐boundary working. • It explores issues such as: whether or not new nursing roles are truly being developed to meet need; the myths and realities of interprofessional working; how competence can be assured; the need …
