How Gendered Mediation Affects Local News Framing of Trafficking Victims
Research suggests that local, grassroots solutions are key to addressing the situations of those trafficked since the experience of trafficking varies so broadly. Hence, this case study investigates how human trafficking victims, or HTVs, have been framed over about the past decade through a merged framing-theory-and-gendered-plus-racial-mediation perspective of 71 sampled articles from two of Maryland’s top (circulating) dailies. Emerging economies in business news
Drawing from nation-branding as a recent development in contemporary globalization, and new middle power theory that examines hierarchies of nations, we used thematic textual analysis to examine business press coverage of the IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) consortium for business news representations and the positioning of IBSA nations in the global arena. Analysis of coverage in India’s The Financial Express, Brazil’s Valor Econômico and Sou…
Has India’s tripartite cooperation with Brazil and South Africa helped it combat human trafficking? A news media framing analysis spanning two decades
In 2003, India, Brazil, and South Africa co-founded the IBSA Dialogue Forum, or IBSA, to counter marginalization and promote social equality among the Global South nations. Given the essentiality of the press in a democracy, and the difficulty in accurately measuring an elusive crime, news analysis offers an effective way to consider how (inter)national policy trickles to practice in the streets, or at citizen level. In this instance, India’s hum…
A South African News Framing Analysis Reveals Modern-Day Slavery Flourishes Domestically Despite an International Human Rights Relationship
What happens to a nation’s human trafficking policies and practices when that nation, a democracy, co-founds an international organisation dedicated to human rights? This project is one element of a tripartite study to explore IBSA membership’s influence on one member–namely, South Africa. South Africa, which has been widely covered in the international press for its history of segregation and other racial and ethnic conflicts over time, is a maj…
Framing cooperation among regional economic powers
This study examined the coverage of the trilateral commission of India, Brazil, and South Africa (IBSA) in the national press of these three countries over a 6-year period. Even though this group has pre-dated the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) group and shares an affinity from political and economic standpoints, it has received little attention in media research. The goal of the study was to understand how news media framed the r…
