  • Exploring Officer Arrest Discretion Following State Policy Changes in Intimate Partner Violence

    Open Access•P Mason, Michelle Petrie et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In 2015, South Carolina passed the Domestic Violence Reform Act giving officers increased arrest discretion and rescinding mandatory arrest laws for intimate partner violence (IPV). Analyses using incident reports (2016/2017) from South Carolina show that officers primarily rely on the presence of five variables to determine arrest: children, injury, property destruction, offender at scene, and weapons. Open Access•Melencia Johnson, Melencia M Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 15

Students in mixed race classrooms often find it difficult to discuss race. Using an assignment where students must have a conversation with someone who lived during the Civil Rights Movement (CRM) brings an element of oral history into the discussion of race and ethnicity. Students are able to discuss race using a historical lens from the perspective of their conversation partner rather than their own. Sharing opinions and observations from an or…

    Open Access•P Mason, Philip B Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Religious Research•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 42

Despite evidence of the salutary effects of religion on physical health, relatively little attention has been paid to the influence of religiosity on the risk of overweight and obesity. Our study examines this relationship with specific attention to the influence of Latter-day Saint (LDS, Mormon) affiliation and attendance on bodyweight status. Latter-day Saints make an excellent test case because LDS proscriptions against the consumption of alco…

  • Moai on the move

    P Mason, Paul M Mason•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2012

Although the majority of the famous moai megaliths of Easter Island are located on the island itself, the ‘collecting’ of moai began towards the end of the nineteenth century and has continued since. In considering both ‘historical’’ moai with an archaeological pedigree, replicas and modern sculptured moai in locations thousands of miles away from the island, this contribution seeks to examine the impact of the different ways in which these moai …

Like the vast majority of Mexican codices, the Mexican herbal known as the Codex Badianus was painted after the Spanish conquest. Its history goes back to 1552, when an Indian convert priest and herbalist from the convent of Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco in the Mexican capital produced a manuscript with images of 184 medicinal plants and texts in Nahuatl. The texts were translated into Latin by another Indian convert priest, Juan Badiano, and the resu…
