  • Migrants' descendants in Italy: Experiences and representations in the research. A literature review

Allievi, Stefano Allievi et al.•ARTICLE•MONDI MIGRANTI•2025

Migrants' descendants have always attracted the attention of social research, particularly in the field of migration studies. Indeed, their condition on the edge between cultural and political containers makes them central subjects in the analysis of migration processes and outcomes. For over twenty years, Italian studies have also focused on this social group, producing numerous - and sometimes disconnected - studies. The literature review draws…

  • Migrazioni situate, percorsi alternativi: Le stratificazioni migratorie della collettività tunisina tra Nord e Sud Italia

    Open Access•Andrea Calabretta•ARTICLE•Quaderni di Sociologia•2025

There are several biases that weigh on migration studies, including the tendency to think of foreign “communities” as monolithic and homogeneous and the reduced analysis of their segmentations, especially in the context of long-term rooting processes. These limitations are even more evident in a context such as the Italian one, where immigrant communities have taken on specific forms and characteristics depending on the local context in which the…

  • Permanent Precarities: The Experience of Temporality of Tunisian Migrants in Sicily’s Transformed Agricultural Strip

    Open Access•Andrea Calabretta•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2025•References: 7

The subject of temporality has offered migration studies new keys for interpreting the everyday life of migrants, and the constraints they face and their unfolding trajectories. In this optic, rural places are particularly interesting since here migrants are often employed in agriculture, a sector characterised by both temporariness and continuous needs for a workforce. In south-eastern Sicily, part of the coastal area is devoted to greenhouse-ba…

  • Lived Religion, Lived Citizenship: The Everyday Experiences of Young Muslims in Italy Between Religion, Morality and Civic Engagement

    Open Access•Allievi, Andrea Calabretta•ARTICLE•Religions•2025•References: 42

In recent years, both religious studies and citizenship studies have developed research approaches grounded in the everyday experience of social actors, leading to the concepts of lived religion and lived citizenship. The convergence of these approaches has fostered innovative research exploring the interplay between citizenship and religious experience, particularly among migrants and their descendants. Building on these theoretical developments…

  • The economic backstage of the landings of emigrants on the island of Lampedusa. An exemplary case of migration industry

    Andrea Calabretta, F Della Puppa•ARTICLE•MONDI MIGRANTI•2024

  • State thought and social hierarchies between Italy and Tunisia. From history to identity

    Open Access•Andrea Calabretta, Marianna Ragone•ARTICLE•REMHU Revista Interdisciplinar da…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The paper draws on the notion of State though as critically discussed by Sayad and on related concepts (nationalism at a distance, integration) to analyse how the State naturalises the division between nationals and non-nationals, building unequal social hierarchies between immigrants and natives that affect the construction of the (social and individual) identities of the migrants themselves. The paper starts with a historical contextualisation …

  • The migratory crossroads of Alte Ceccato: An Emblematic Case of Migratory Stratification

Andrea Calabretta, F Della Puppa et al.•ARTICLE•Identities•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Italy acts as a migratory crossroads in which emigration, immigration, and internal migration continuously overlap. These processes have affected not only large cities, but also small towns such as Alte Ceccato (Veneto Region). After WWII this small industrial town received immigrants from the surrounding countryside, then from Southern Italy, and since the 1990s from the so-called Global South. Today it receives refugees from sub-Saharan Africa.…

  • Young people with Tunisian origins living in Italy: A case of transnational lived citizenship

    Open Access•Andrea Calabretta•ARTICLE•MIGRATION LETTERS•2023

In recent years, the merging of the lived citizenship approach with the transnational perspective has shed a brighter light on the spatiality of everyday citizenship practices. Starting from this premise, the present study investigates whether and how a group of young people, aged between 22 and 28, with Tunisian parentage residing in the province of Modena (Northern Italy) live their citizenship transnationally. It involves questioning what thei…

  • Una questione di sguardi? Considerazioni sui limiti nell'utilizzo della prospettiva transnazionale: Il caso delle collettività nordafricane in Italia

    Andrea Calabretta•ARTICLE•MONDI MIGRANTI•2022

  • Established or Outsiders? Rileggere Elias nella collettività tunisina di Modena

Open Access•Andrea Calabretta, Vincenzo Romania•ARTICLE•Cambio Rivista sulle Trasformazioni…•2022

The works of Elias, characterised by his unique relational and processual gaze, have recently inspired much research in the migration field. In particular, the established-outsiders figuration has opened a fruitful way to overcome the tendency of naturalising cultural and economic differences, hiding the power relations between different groups. The objective of this paper is to apply the figurational framework to the study of the Tunisian commun…
