  • Hunter-fisher-gatherers by the Cantabrian seashore

    Open Access•Alejandro León-Cristóbal, Atilio Francisco J Zangrando et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2026

Multidisciplinary investigations of archaeological assemblages from the Cantabrian region (coastal area in northern Iberian Peninsula) have been crucial in expanding our insight into the lifeways of the last foragers who inhabited the Atlantic façade of Europe. Despite recent methodological advances that have improved our understanding of Mesolithic littoral groups and shellfishing strategies, the archaeological record still limits a comprehensiv…

  • Lithics from the lower gallery at La Garma (Zone IV)

Open Access•Adriana Chauvin, Miguel Ángel Fano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•Referencias: 9

Lithic industry provides key information for understanding the Magdalenian occupation in Zon IV. • A technological analysis of the retouched and unretouched artefacts is carried out. • The study of the raw materials suggests a long-distance circulation. • Technological and raw material analysis reinforces the interpretation of symbolic activities in Zone IV The lithic assemblage recovered from Zone IV in the Lower Gallery at La Garma (Cantabria, …

  • Mobility and the use of littoral resources in the Late Mesolithic of Northern Spain

    Open Access•Alejandro León-Cristóbal, Asier García-Escárzaga et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 47

Littoral resources have been consumed by humans since at least the Middle Palaeolithic. Examples of the use of molluscs have been documented along the shores of Europe during that period but it was not until many millennia later that European hunter-fisher-gatherer societies exploited those resources intensively-see the case of Nerja cave during the Younger Dryas. This economic activity caused the accumulation of shells at archaeological sites du…

  • Pioneer Archaeologists and the Influence of Their Scientific Relationships on Mesolithic Studies in North Iberia

Open Access•Miguel Ángel Fano, Marco De La Rasilla Vives et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2022•Referencias: 3

Count Vega del Sella’s research marked the beginning of the long tradition of Mesolithic studies in Asturias (North Spain). Another pioneer, L. Sierra, explored a number of caves in Cantabria with Mesolithic shell-middens, but no specific research line was developed on this kind of deposit in the province. The early excavation at Santimamiñe Cave recorded the Basque Country’s first shell-midden, which was thought to belong to a different facies f…

  • Beyond images

    Open Access•Miguel Ángel Fano, Alejandro García-Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 58

In this study of the location and physical characteristics of the surroundings of a series of decorated caves in the Nalón river basin in Asturias (northern Iberia), the spatial analysis, which included fieldwork and the use of GIS, has defined the external archaeological context (EAC) of pre-Magdalenian art in that area. The spatial information has been integrated with the study of the rock art in order to observe tendencies that are statistical…

  • Re-evaluating the Neolithic

Open Access•M Cubas, Jesús Altuna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Prehistory•2016•Citada por: 22•Referencias: 4

Research projects undertaken in the Cantabrian region since 1980 have produced new, high-quality information about the neolithisation process(es) in this area. It is now necessary to review this archaeological information and test the main hypotheses put forward to explain it. This paper presents an update on the archaeological evidence (sites, chronological dates, archaeozoological, archaeobotanical and technological information) for the early N…
