Middle Neolithic floodplain grazing in the Wetterau (Hesse, Central Germany) – An integrated multi–proxy study
The first farmers in the Wetterau Basin (Hesse, Central Germany) are associated with the Early Neolithic Linear Pottery culture (5400–5000/4900 cal. BCE). Following a brief population decline at the transition to the Middle Neolithic, the Rössen culture (4750–4600 cal. BCE) expanded into peripheral landscapes outside the regions dominated by fertile soils derived from loess, and into higher terrain. This expansion was accompanied by changes in ag…
The Impact of English on Other Languages and Linguistic Justice
This article explores the implications of English's role as a global lingua franca for other languages, with a particular focus on the transformations these languages undergo due to English influence. Such changes are most evident in the lexical domain, where they are typically examined under the framework of lexical borrowing or Anglicisms. However, they also extend to grammatical, stylistic, and pragmatic levels, affecting formulation structure…
Balancing data gain and effort
Motivation In Organic Residue Analysis of ancient pottery, sampling artefacts only once is standard practice, emphasizing high sample throughput over maximum informational output per artefact. Research question Lipids are unevenly distributed in pottery vessels, rendering single-sample protocols prone to overlooking areas with high information content. We tested whether multiple sampling increases the amount of information obtained per artefact. …
Fecal lipid markers in tandem with ancient sedimentary DNA as a tool for tracing past livestock farming from soils and sediments
Reconstructing past environments can be challenging when archaeological materials are missing. The study of organic molecules, which remain as traces in the environment over millennia, represents one way to overcome this drawback. Fecal lipid markers (steroids and bile acids) and ancient sedimentary DNA offer a complementary and cross-validating analytical tool to broaden the range of methods used in environmental archaeology. However, little is …
A Previously Unknown Building Structure in Ancient Olympia (Western Peloponnese, Greece) Revealed by Geoarchaeological Investigations and Its Interpretation as a Possible Harbor
The ancient site of Olympia is located on the northern fringe of the Basin of Makrisia at the confluence of the Kladeos and Alpheios rivers (western Peloponnese, Greece) and was used as a venue for the Panhellenic Games from Archaic times until the 4th century AD. Geophysical prospection (frequency domain electromagnetic induction and electrical resistivity tomography) was carried out as a basis for detailed geoarchaeological investigations. In d…
Testing sample selection criteria and loss of biomarkers during cleaning of archaeological unglazed pottery to maximize organic residue quantities
As the number of studies in organic residue analysis (ORA) of ancient pottery—a sensitive but as of today also a destructive method—increases, archaeologists are interested in knowing which samples promise the biggest abundance of analytes in order to avoid unnecessary loss of artefacts. Another frequently asked question is whether the routinely performed cleaning procedure should be omitted for samples intended for ORA to preserve the availabili…
Pit without finds = worthless pit? Investigating a Roman military camp from Caesar’s Gallic Wars (58 – 51 BC) near Hermeskeil (Germany)
Soil investigations to determine the function of different areas within the Roman fortress near Hermeskeil (Germany)
The area of the Hermeskeil main camp, built by the Roman army during Caesar's Gallic Wars, is subdivided by an internal fortification consisting of a ditch and bank and separating a larger southern from a smaller northern part of the fortress. Our study deals with possible functional differences between these two parts of the temporary camp since both a separate stationing of potentially mounted auxilia and a secondary reduction of the camp's sur…
Palaeoenvironmental data indicate late quaternary anthropogenic impacts on vegetation and landscapes in Mzimba, northern Malawi
Landscapes are formed by long-term interactions between the underlying geology and climatic, edaphic and biotic factors, including human activity. The Kasitu Valley in the Mzimba District of northern Malawi includes the Kasitu River and its adjacent floodplains and uplands, and it has been a location of sustained human occupation since at least 16 thousand years ago (ka) based on archaeological excavations from rockshelters. We trace the changing…
Assessing 14 C Blanks in the Small-Scale Analysis of N -Alkane Compound-Specific-Radiocarbon-Analysis
Compound-specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) provides the possibility to date sample material at a molecular level. N -alkanes are considered as specific compounds with high potential to CSRA. As these compounds originate from plant waxes, their radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis can provide valuable information about the age and origin of organic materials. This helps to reconstruct and understand environmental conditions and changes in vegetation in…
English as a lingua franca and linguistic justice
This paper focuses on English as a lingua franca, an area of research that has gone through several phases of reconceptualization over recent years. What has not changed despite the reframing is the insistence that ELF, with its focus on intelligibility rather than formal accuracy, is not to be judged on the basis of standard English norms. In response to these claims, researchers have argued from linguo-political and philosophical perspectives t…
A new method for the identification of archaeological soils by their spectral signatures in the vis-NIR region
This paper introduces a statistical method to identify spectral signatures of buried archaeological remains and distinguish them from spectra of the background soil in the visible to near infrared region. The proposed method is based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The difference between an archaeological spectrum and non-archaeological soil spectra is quantified by a so-called R value. R values larger than 1 indicate that the spectrum…

Linguistic and pragmatic influence of English
Language choices and practices of migrants in Germany
The language uses of twenty migrants in Germany who have English in their language repertoires are investigated through semi-structured interviews and qualitative content analysis. The findings suggest that in occupation-related situations and daily life, these migrants resort to English in situations that are too difficult to handle in German. For most of them this is only temporary, before they have a sufficient command of German. Whether and h…
Esperanto – a lingua franca in use
A lingua franca can be a mediation choice for people who do not share a common language. Esperanto, a planned language, functions in this way as the working language in an educational non-governmental organization. The main characteristics of this use are described on the basis of interviews, field notes and spontaneous conversations analyzed using the methods of Conversation Analysis. It is shown that Esperanto functions as the dominant means of…

Holocene climate variability in Central Germany and a potential link to the polar North Atlantic
Here, we present high-resolution trace element and stable isotope records from three coeval Holocene stalagmites from the Herbstlabyrinth cave system, Central Germany. All stalagmites were precisely dated using MC-ICPMS 230 Th/U-dating. One stalagmite started to grow at 13.62 ± 0.13 ka BP, covering the late Glacial; the other two speleothems started to grow at 11.13 ± 0.08 and 10.26 ± 0.08 ka BP, respectively. The combined record covers the entir…
The topic of planned languages (Esperanto) in the current specialist literature
Although planned languages such as Esperanto have achieved only limited success in their attempt to facilitate international communication so far, they have attracted considerable attention in discussions on the language question. This article examines how the topic is treated in recent publications on linguistics and language policy. The analysis reveals that researchers put forward a number of recurrent arguments for and against. Among argument…

The Esperanto denaskulo
Native speakers traditionally occupy a special position in foreign language teaching and learning because their language use is norm-providing. In linguistic studies they are crucial as informants because they decide whether an utterance is correct or incorrect. Although Esperanto as a planned language aims at facilitating international communication by means of a common second language, there are also people who speak this language as a mother t…
The English-as-a-lingua-franca approach
English has spread so widely around the world that its native speakers are now outnumbered by its non-native speakers. Recent publications have shown that the dominance of English has led to severe disadvantages for non-Anglophones. Several options of language policy have been presented to find fair and democratic approaches to international communication. Their scope includes different variants of multilingualism, the limitation of the number of…
English as a lingua franca – a native-culture-free code? Language of communication vs. language of identification
English has become the dominant means of international communication. Its non-native speakers now far outnumber the conventional native speakers in the UK, the USA, Canada etc. Against this background, a number of authors have recently stressed the functions for which foreign languages are learned. They make a distinction between a ‘language of communication’ and a ‘language of identification’. The terms, which were coined by the German applied l…

Standardization and self-regulation in an international speech community
This paper is concerned with Esperanto, the only planned language system that has managed the successful transition from the status of a mere project to a full-fledged language. This is partly due to linguostructural properties, but above all to extralinguistic factors. Esperanto has found a sufficiently diverse and productive speech community which guarantees the constant and sustained dissemination of the language. This paper describes Esperant…
Interlinguistics and Esperanto studies at universities
The Bologna process aims to create a European Higher Education Area by 2010, in which university studies are comparable and compatible and degrees more transparent. Its priority is the introduction of the three-cycle system Bachelor — Master — Doctorate. At the University of Leipzig a project was launched to connect the implementation of the new structures with the establishment of a programme in interlinguistics and Esperanto studies. In the win…
