Burden of disease attributable to suboptimal diet, metabolic risks and low physical activity in Ethiopia and comparison with Eastern sub-Saharan African countries, 1990–2015: Findings from the Global …
In Ethiopia, while there was a decline in mortality and DALYs attributable to CMU over the last two and half decades, the burden attributable to dietary and metabolic risks have increased during the same period. Lifestyle and metabolic risks of NCDs require more attention by the primary health care system of the country
The Evolution of Urban Society: Early Mesopotamia and Prehispanic Mexico
The Evolution of Urban Society is concerned with the presentation and analysis of regularities in the two best-documented examples of early, independent urban society: Mesopotamia and central Mexico. It provides a systematic comparison of institutional forms and trends of growth that are to be found in both of them. Emphasizing basic similarities in structure rather than the many acknowledged formal features by which each culture is rendered dist…
Area-Level Socioeconomic Characteristics, Prevalence and Trajectories of Cardiometabolic Risk
This study examines the relationships between area-level socioeconomic position (SEP) and the prevalence and trajectories of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the count of its constituents (i.e., disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension). A cohort of 4,056 men and women aged 18+ living in Adelaide, Australia was established in 2000-2003. MetS was ascertained at baseline, four and eight years via clin…

Ancient Mesopotamian Urbanism and Blurred Disciplinary Boundaries
Most would agree that anthropology needs a degree of consensus and structure and, arguably, of "identity" as well. But as a discipline, its boundaries are blurred, with ongoing negotiations along its changing peripheries. Frontiers with history and the humanities are examples. Other examples are in the biological sciences, other social sciences, and public and academic policy. This article follows the form of a 65-year contextualized semiautobiog…

Shepherds at Umma in the Third Dynasty of Ur: Interlocutors with a World beyond the Scribal Field of Ordered Vision
The Third Dynasty of Ur was a highly bureaucratized, late 3rd millennium B.C.E. empire centering in southern Mesopotamia. Its state superstructure, known almost exclusively from many tens of thousands of looted cuneiform tablets, has long been studied. However, these sources deal only indirectly or not at all with the impacts of imperial rule on the great mass of the subject population. Drawing upon an earlier prosopographic study of animal husba…
"Critique of Guillermo Algaze's "The Sumerian Takeoff
Drawing upon modern economic theorists, Guillermo Algaze emphasizes continuous, interlocking, self-reinforcing processes of growth and external trade as keys to "takeoff" toward southern Mesopotamia's regional leadership in the fourth millennium B.C. But the search for historical causality, always complex, would better avoid supposed universals of individual motivation as determinate roots of behavior everywhere and concentrate in the first insta…

Semiparametric Approaches to Stochastic Panel Frontiers With Applications in the Banking Industry
This article introduces new modeling and estimation methods designed to help mitigate problems of endogeneity and misspecification. We use an output distance function to model the technology of a multioutput firm. We also use results from Park and Simar and Park, Sickles, and Simar on semiparametric efficient estimation of panel models to estimate multioutput stochastic distance frontiers, for which the distribution of the effects and a subgroup …
Forums, Not Temples
Converging forces for change reflect the increasing dependence of most museums on public participation and support, as well as the rising scholarly, curatorial, and exhibition standards expected of them. Museums accordingly cannot escape, and instead are tending to become a focus for some of the multicultural divisions and tensions that are characteristic of our times. The role of institutional authority and expertise is an increasingly contingen…
Anthropological Perspectives on Ancient Trade
Most studies of ancient trade, it is argued, have tended to isolate the subject too narrowly as habitual patterns in the movement of goods. New knowledge continues to be generated using that approach, partly as a result of recent technical advances in archaeology. Substantial further progress, however, will require an understanding of the more complex and multifaceted significance of trade that must be derived mainly from ethnographic and ethnohi…

A school bus on its evening route was stopped (time-out) following any instance of standing, incorrect in-seat posture, or fighting. An Attempt to Pretrain DRL Collateral Responding in Rats and Pigeons
26 rats and two pigeons were trained on a variety of counting schedules, all requiring a sequence of responses on one lever followed by a response on a second lever. Following the counting schedules, subjects were switched to differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate contingencies. None of the pretraining schedules resulted in reliable use of the counting lever for collateral responding during the DRL interresponse time
